The Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) based on chest X-ray has been developed to facilitate clinical diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP); however, this scoring system has a low diagnostic performance. We developed the Lung Ultrasound and Pentraxin-3 Pulmonary Infection Score (LUPPIS) for early diagnosis of VAP and evaluated the performance of this new scoring system. ⋯ LUPPIS appears to provide better results in the prediction of VAP compared to CPIS, and the importance of lung ultrasound and PTX-3 is emphasized, which is a distinctive property of LUPPIS.

Nowadays, depression is conceptualized as an immune-inflammatory and oxidative stress disorder associated with neuroprogressive changes as a consequence of peripherally activated immune-inflammatory pathways, including peripheral cytokines and immune cells which penetrate into the brain via the blood barrier, as well as nitro-oxidative stress and antioxidant imbalances. The aim of this study was to investigate whether personality traits predisposing to a depressive episode (hypochondria, dysthymic, hysteria) are associated with changes in peripheral gene expression for selected indicators of inflammation and oxidative balance. ⋯ The scales specified for the neurotic triad of the MMPI-2 test correspond substantially with the expression of MnSOD, MPO and metalloproteinases 2 and 9 at the mRNA and protein levels in the group of patients suffering from depression.

Cavin 2 down-regulation is reported in several malignant tumors and is associated with tumor progression. However, the role of Cavin 2 in lung adenocarcinoma is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic and diagnostic significance of Cavin 2 in lung adenocarcinoma. ⋯ Cavin 2 has low expression in lung adenocarcinoma, which might be regarded as a potential prognostic and diagnostic biomarker.

Gastric cancer (GC) is the most widespread type of cancer after lung and liver cancer in men and after breast cancer in women. Thus, the present study was intended to evaluate the effect of ketamine (KET) on gastric cancer cells. ⋯ Our results suggest that ketamine has the ability to inhibit progression of gastric cancer via induction of apoptosis and attenuation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR.

Sulodexide (SDX) is used for the treatment of many vascular disorders due to its anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory and anti-atherosclerotic properties. However, the detailed molecular mechanism of its endothelioprotective action is still not completely understood. There is increasing evidence suggesting that antioxidant enzymes play an important role in anti-ischemic properties of SDX. We postulate that up-regulation of glutathione-S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) mediated by the transcription factor Nrf2 could be associated with the antioxidant effect of SDX on vascular endothelial cells. ⋯ SDX induces a rapid onset of the antioxidant response by up-regulating the expression of GSTP1 and Nrf2 in endothelial cells subjected to in vitro simulated ischemia.
