Bladder transitional cell carcinoma (BTCC) is one of the most prevalent human malignant diseases. Gemcitabine is commonly applied in the treatment of BTCC while acquired gemcitabine resistance has caused a severe impediment to recovery. This study aimed to investigate the function of DRAM2 in regulating gemcitabine resistance of BTCC. ⋯ Our data suggested that downregulation of DRAM2 rescued the sensitivity of T24-GEM cells to gemcitabine, providing an appropriate therapeutic target for BTCC treatment.

The purpose of this study was to introduce a measure of patient's burden based on Elixhauser's comorbidity index. The mentioned measure needed to be based solely on administrative data and be applicable to all specialisations of hospital treatment. Moreover, the intention was to validate the estimation power of the models based on the groups of hospitalisations which were similar with respect to the primary diagnosis. ⋯ Our results support the hypothesis that comorbidity properly describes mortality in homogeneous groups of patients. Our models could be condensed into one, uniform, single-number comorbidity scale that summarizes all of the patient's burden. It was found that the odds ratio of some variables differed between homogeneous groups.

The most widely accepted theory for the development of preeclampsia is the "two-stage theory". An imbalance between antiangiogenic and proangiogenic factors is considered the link between the two stages. ⋯ The aim of this review is to present the current use of different biochemical tests in the prediction, diagnosis and management of preeclampsia. Development of these diagnostic methods in recent years and a belief in their ground-breaking role in modern management of preeclampsia make this review especially important.

The aim of this study was to analyse the incidences of hypopituitarism before and after surgical resection of sellar tumours and to find the factors related to the incidences. ⋯ To sum up, we found that the postoperative incidences of hypopituitarism were higher than the preoperative incidences. Tumour type, surgery resection methods, and tumour sizes were important contributing factors to the incidence of postoperative hypogonadism.

Any substance that induces production of free radicals can be a potential cause of brain damage. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between some metal ions and oxidative stress biomarkers in the blood of patients with brain tumor and hydrocephalus. ⋯ There are strong correlations between some metal ion concentrations and certain oxidative stress biomarkers in the blood of patients, which supports our hypothesis, but the observed trend needs to be further investigated.
