Ox-LDL (oxidized low-density lipoprotein)-induced endothelial cell injury and dysfunction of vascular smooth muscle cells play critical roles in the development of atherosclerosis (AS). Tropomyosin 2 (TPM2) has been implicated in cardiac diseases, but its critical role and regulatory mechanism in AS progression have not yet been elucidated. ⋯ TPM2 had an advantageous impact on ox-LDL-induced AS progression in vitro by mediating the RhoA pathway. This evidence might contribute to the therapy of AS.

Influenza may be correlated with a high number of complications and generate high costs of treatment. The study aimed to estimate the socioeconomic significance of hospitalized influenza cases. ⋯ Influenza complications generate higher systemic and patient's costs, both direct and indirect. The group of children for whom the difference is especially marked is under 2 years of age.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a prototypic autoimmune disorder with a variable clinical course, ranging from mild to severe forms. It mainly occurs in women, especially those of fertile age. The aim of the study was to systematically analyze the associations of perinatal disease activity with adverse outcomes of Chinese patients with SLE and their offspring. ⋯ For perinatal women with SLE, renal activity is associated with a variety of adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, maternal perinatal disease activity does not seem to affect the growth of their offspring.

The aim of the study was to observe the effect of Sanguiin on cerebral edema and behavior in a rat cerebral hemorrhage model. ⋯ Sanguiin can significantly improve the neurological deficits in rats with cerebral hemorrhage, and down-regulate the expression of MMP-9 after cerebral hemorrhage, suggesting that Sanguiin has a certain protective effect on the blood-brain barrier after cerebral hemorrhage.

Airway infections represent one of the most common causes of mortality worldwide. The authors sought to describe patients hospitalized for lung and mediastinum abscesses in Poland from 2009 to 2016. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first evaluation of the disease in Poland. ⋯ Presented recent data on lung and mediastinum abscesses in Poland may be helpful in comparative analyses among European countries.
