Correlation between sperm mitochondrial ND5 and ND6 gene variations and total fertilisation failure.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between sperm mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (ND5) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 6 (ND6) gene variations and total fertilisation failure (TFF). ⋯ Our results suggested that the ND5 and ND6 gene variations are correlated with TFF. Furthermore, this study indicated that haplogroup R and haplogroup D4a might be risk factors for TFF.

The current study aimed to evaluate the association of anti-hyperuricemia treatment and prevalent cardiovascular disease (CVD) in hypertensive patients. ⋯ In hypertensive patients with hyperuricemia, anti-hyperuricemia treatment was associated with lower odds of prevalent CVD.

Evaluation of atherogenic laboratory markers in Behçet's disease patients with vascular involvement.
Behçet's disease is a chronic inflammatory vasculitis presenting with immunological and endothelial changes. The aim of the present study is to evaluate blood levels of diagnostic markers which can be used in Behçet's patients with vascular involvement. ⋯ Increased levels of inflammatory and atherogenic markers in Behçet's patients are an expected outcome due to the inflammatory nature of the disease. Especially, elevated levels of homocysteine, TNF-α and Lp-pla2 make them candidate diagnostic tools to be helpful in clinical evaluation of Behçet's disease patients with vascular involvement.

Thiol and disulphide levels are biomarkers that provide useful information about oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity, showing a different homoeostasis in inflammatory and proliferative diseases. We aimed to clarify the possible aetiology of this disease by using thiol and disulphide levels in patients with fibromyalgia, the basis of which has not yet been clearly elucidated. ⋯ Thiol-disulphide balance in fibromyalgia was found to be similar to benign proliferative diseases, suggesting that the underlying mechanism is more likely to be of proliferative pattern rather than inflammatory. Additionally, fibromyalgia is not directly associated with increase in oxidative stress. The molecular mechanisms need to be elucidated.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of human semen on the proliferation, survival, migration and invasion of HeLa cervical cancer cells by analyzing the extracellular regulated protein kinase (ERK) pathway. ⋯ Semen promoted the proliferation of HeLa cells by activating the ERK pathway and showed increased tumorigenic potential in vivo. Human seminal plasma might be a potential factor contributing to the development of cervical cancer.
