The aim of our study is to investigate the effect of hyperbilirubinaemia on synaptic plasticity in the dentate gyrus (DG) region of the rat hippocampus. ⋯ These findings suggest that hyperbilirubinaemia could induce impairment of synaptic plasticity in the rat DG area in vivo, including I/O function, paired-pulse ratio (PPR), and LTP, which may be closely related to cognitive impairment.

The association between novel blood-based inflammatory indices and patient survival has been reported with reference to various cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of preoperative platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derived neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) and lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR) in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) treated with nephrectomy. ⋯ Only dNLR was an independent prognostic factor for CSS and OS. Nevertheless, our study indicates that all examined complete blood count-based biomarkers may be useful tools in managing RCC patients treated with a surgical approach.

The oxidative stress contributes to all three phases of carcinogenesis and represents a concomitant condition in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). RCC is the most common type of neoplasm of the kidney, and despite numerous studies the set of predictive and prognostic markers of survival are still unknown. The aim of our study was to examine the relation between antioxidant (AO) status and overall survival (OS) in RCC patients. ⋯ In our cohort of patients, different antioxidant parameters were not found to be predictors for OS of patients with RCC, who underwent radical nephrectomy.

The interval from the peak to the end of the electrocardiographic T wave (Tp-Te) may correspond to malignant ventricular arrhythmias. In this study we aimed to assess Tp-Te variability and investigate the transmural dispersion of repolarisation in pulmonary sarcoidosis disease without proofed cardiac involvement. ⋯ Pulmonary sarcoidosis is suspected to have cardiac involvement; therefore, we need to develop new approaches. We present strong evidence that Tp-Te intervals were increased in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis, which suggests that there may be a link between sarcoidosis and ventricular arrhythmias without proofed cardiac involvement.

Aberrant expression of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been implicated in various diseases, including cancer. However, little is known about lncRNAs in human brain gliomas. ⋯ Our data suggest that altered expression of lncRNAs may be a critical determinant of tumorigenesis in glioma patients.
