Nowadays, depression is conceptualized as an immune-inflammatory and oxidative stress disorder associated with neuroprogressive changes as a consequence of peripherally activated immune-inflammatory pathways, including peripheral cytokines and immune cells which penetrate into the brain via the blood barrier, as well as nitro-oxidative stress and antioxidant imbalances. The aim of this study was to investigate whether personality traits predisposing to a depressive episode (hypochondria, dysthymic, hysteria) are associated with changes in peripheral gene expression for selected indicators of inflammation and oxidative balance. ⋯ The scales specified for the neurotic triad of the MMPI-2 test correspond substantially with the expression of MnSOD, MPO and metalloproteinases 2 and 9 at the mRNA and protein levels in the group of patients suffering from depression.

Retinoblastoma (RB) is a malignant tumor that is derived from photoreceptors. It is common in children under 3 years old with a family genetic predisposition. MicroRNA-133a-3p (miR-133a-3p) is one of the tumor-related miRNAs that interprets a critical function in the genesis and development of various tumors. This study investigated the effects and underlying mechanisms of miR-133a-3p in RB. ⋯ Our results reveal that miR-133a-3p exhibits anti-cancer effects by targeting CREB1 in RB. This study provides a new direction for effective targeted treatment of this disease.

The Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) based on chest X-ray has been developed to facilitate clinical diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP); however, this scoring system has a low diagnostic performance. We developed the Lung Ultrasound and Pentraxin-3 Pulmonary Infection Score (LUPPIS) for early diagnosis of VAP and evaluated the performance of this new scoring system. ⋯ LUPPIS appears to provide better results in the prediction of VAP compared to CPIS, and the importance of lung ultrasound and PTX-3 is emphasized, which is a distinctive property of LUPPIS.

Gastric cancer (GC) is the most widespread type of cancer after lung and liver cancer in men and after breast cancer in women. Thus, the present study was intended to evaluate the effect of ketamine (KET) on gastric cancer cells. ⋯ Our results suggest that ketamine has the ability to inhibit progression of gastric cancer via induction of apoptosis and attenuation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR.

Liquid-based cytology allows to apply modern and specific analyses of hrHPV genotyping in p16/Ki-67 test. All of these together could raise accuracy ratio for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion above 90%. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of LBC, hrHPV testing, and p16/Ki-67 testing in diagnosis of high-grade cervical intraepithelial lesions. ⋯ The results of our study indicate hrHPV genotyping as a good biomarker for the triage of patients with an abnormal cytological report. In our opinion, the hrHPV test reaches the highest level of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, and should be considered as crucial diagnostic test in cervical screening.
