Retinoblastoma (RB) is a malignant tumor that is derived from photoreceptors. It is common in children under 3 years old with a family genetic predisposition. MicroRNA-133a-3p (miR-133a-3p) is one of the tumor-related miRNAs that interprets a critical function in the genesis and development of various tumors. This study investigated the effects and underlying mechanisms of miR-133a-3p in RB. ⋯ Our results reveal that miR-133a-3p exhibits anti-cancer effects by targeting CREB1 in RB. This study provides a new direction for effective targeted treatment of this disease.

Breast cancer mortality trends in Europe among women in perimenopausal and postmenopausal age (45+).
The aim of the study was to analyze breast cancer (BC) mortality trends among women at the age of 45 years old and older (45+) in the 28 European Union (EU) countries, as well as in 3 non-EU countries - Norway, Switzerland and the Russian Federation (control group) within the period 1959-2017. ⋯ Due to the availability of better treatment options, as well as presence of effective tools for detecting BC at the early stages of progression, BC mortality is falling in most analyzed European countries. To maintain this situation and to stop BC mortality increase in the analyzed age group in Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, immediate actions for improvement of BC management in the European health care systems should be considered.

Abnormality in HBB results in an inherited recessive blood disorder, which can be caused by variants at the transcriptional or translational level affecting the stability and the production of the HBB chain. The severity of the disease relies on the variant's characteristics. This study aimed to identify the common β-globin HBB variants in the population of the Eastern Province, which has the highest prevalence of blood diseases in Saudi Arabia. ⋯ This current study updated the HBB gene variations with newly identified variants of HBB gene and co-inheritance with α-globin deletions. The identified β-globin mutations will strengthen the genetic reference that could aid in characterizing mutations that are associated with phenotype of thalassemia in a specific region.

Ovarian cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women. Treatments for ovarian cancer include surgery followed by chemotherapy. However, the survival rate for ovarian cancer is still not satisfactory. Moreover, the current chemotherapy has numerous associated side effects. Therefore there is an urgent need to look for novel and more viable treatment options. Against this backdrop the present study was designed to evaluate the anticancer activity of sugiol against ovarian cancer cells. ⋯ The results of the present study indicate that sugiol exerts potent anticancer effects on SKOV3 cells via induction of cell cycle arrest, mitochondrial apoptosis and inhibition of the RAF/MEK/ERK signalling pathway.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and HIV/AIDS have been demonstrated to induce endocrine/metabolic dysfunction with a consequential increase in morbidity/mortality due to organ toxicities. This study aimed at investigating the possible protective effect of Hypoxis hemerocallidea (HH) against metabolic and hepatic histomorphology of diabetic rats under HAART. ⋯ Presumptive hypoglycemic use of HH with HAART by people living with HIV/AIDS requires caution as implications for hepatocellular injuries are suspected with further uncontrolled metabolic disorder.
