Nowadays, depression is conceptualized as an immune-inflammatory and oxidative stress disorder associated with neuroprogressive changes as a consequence of peripherally activated immune-inflammatory pathways, including peripheral cytokines and immune cells which penetrate into the brain via the blood barrier, as well as nitro-oxidative stress and antioxidant imbalances. The aim of this study was to investigate whether personality traits predisposing to a depressive episode (hypochondria, dysthymic, hysteria) are associated with changes in peripheral gene expression for selected indicators of inflammation and oxidative balance. ⋯ The scales specified for the neurotic triad of the MMPI-2 test correspond substantially with the expression of MnSOD, MPO and metalloproteinases 2 and 9 at the mRNA and protein levels in the group of patients suffering from depression.

Abnormality in HBB results in an inherited recessive blood disorder, which can be caused by variants at the transcriptional or translational level affecting the stability and the production of the HBB chain. The severity of the disease relies on the variant's characteristics. This study aimed to identify the common β-globin HBB variants in the population of the Eastern Province, which has the highest prevalence of blood diseases in Saudi Arabia. ⋯ This current study updated the HBB gene variations with newly identified variants of HBB gene and co-inheritance with α-globin deletions. The identified β-globin mutations will strengthen the genetic reference that could aid in characterizing mutations that are associated with phenotype of thalassemia in a specific region.

The risk of HBV reactivation is important in lymphoma patients receiving immunosuppressive chemotherapy containing steroids or anti-CD20 antibodies. We aimed to establish the prevalence of HBV Ag and anti-HBc serologic positive results in patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in Poland before anti-CD20 therapy initiation; to assess the frequency of insufficient HBV screening; and to assess the association between inadequate HBV screening and diagnosis according to the WHO classification and age or gender. ⋯ In Polish lymphoma patients the incidence of positive HBsAg and/or anti-HBc results is consistent with the prevalence in the United States or Australia. The adherence to appropriate HBV screening guidelines in Polish centers is not sufficient. We should intensify educational strategies in the global oncohematologic medical community.

Lysyl hydroxylase 3 (LH3) is a collagen post-translational modifying enzyme; it is abnormally activated during the formation of collagen cross-links. iCRT3 is an inhibitor of both Wnt and β-catenin responsive transcription. We hypothesized that LH3 is regulated by TGFβ1/Smad3 signaling and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways. Some evidence suggested that there is complicated cross-talk between the two signal pathways in the genesis of pulmonary fibrosis. ⋯ This study suggests that PLOD3 (LH3) represents a target to prevent pulmonary fibrosis.

Reelin (RELN) is an extracellular glycoprotein best known to be crucial for neuronal migration during the embryonic period and regulation of synaptic plasticity in the adult brain, with recent studies pointing to reelin playing an important part in the organization of peripheral organs as well. Abnormalities in RELN function are associated with a variety of medical conditions in human beings. These alterations partly also reflect in RELN's blood levels, which gives it a clinical relevance as a potential biomarker. Requirement for a possible clinical use is a profound understanding of RELN's physiology. We hypothesized blood RELN levels could underlie time-dependent variations and therefore examined individuals' serum reelin concentrations in the course of one day. ⋯ Our findings point to short-term fluctuations in blood RELN levels being part of physiological RELN homeostasis. This is of special interest with regard to a potential clinical use of RELN as a biomarker.
