MicroRNA-1179 regulates proliferation and chemosensitivity of human ovarian cancer cells by targeting the PTEN-mediated PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.
Owing to widespread roles of miRs, the dysregulation of their expression in human tissues has been linked with the development of several diseases such as cancer. The study was designed to investigate the role and therapeutic potential of miR-1179 in ovarian cancer. ⋯ The results of this study indicate that miR-1179 may prove to be an important therapeutic target for ovarian cancer.

The duration of treatment is not well established, especially in the negative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture. The aim of this study is to explore the influence of duration of treatment in neonatal bacterial meningitis. ⋯ Third generation cephalosporin therapy does not have a different prognosis for negative CSF culture of neonatal bacterial meningitis in term infants in this study.

Arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) is a disease that affects the lower extremities. The mechanism of ASO is associated with the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). miR-21 plays a key role in various biological processes of the cardiovascular system, associated with the proliferation, migration and apoptosis of VSMCs. It is unclear, however, if miR-21 is involved in the regulation of ASO. ⋯ We demonstrated that the expression of miR-21 in HASMCs could find potential application in cardiac therapy. Inhibition of the activity of AKT or ERK could attenuate miR-21-induced cell proliferation and migration as well as altering morphology of HASMCs. The present study aimed to indicate the potential roles of miR-21 in ASO processes, and the results provided a novel therapeutic approach for treating ASO and new targets for preventing ASO in earlier stages.

Despite its importance in pre-chemotherapy counselling, specific reproductive toxicological information about cisplatin and paclitaxel is very rare. This study aimed to investigate the concentrations at which cisplatin and paclitaxel, alone or combined, affect the in vitro development of ovarian follicles. Their differential effects on the oocytes and surrounding granulosa cells was also evaluated. ⋯ These data provide an insight into the critical concentrations regarding in vitro follicular development and the differential effects of chemotherapeutic effects on oocytes and granulosa cells. Further studies are necessary to develop more efficient pre-chemotherapeutic fertility-sparing medical treatment that can evade oocyte-specific damage.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to establish whether vascular pulse wave velocity (PWV) as a measure of arterial stiffness is changed in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). ⋯ This meta-analysis suggests that FH patients do not have significantly altered PWV when compared with normocholesterolemic individuals. However, a subanalysis of studies in which IMT was measured indicated that IMT is increased in FH patients compared with controls.
