Mesothelioma is a cancer strongly linked to exposure to carcinogenic minerals, especially asbestos. The aim of the study was to detect the incidence of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) in Egypt, to clarify the impact of occupational and environmental risk factors, and to characterise its demographic features. ⋯ There was a steady increase in the incidence of MPM from 1998 to 2005 followed by a decline during 2006-2007. Mesothelioma in Egypt is mainly concentrated in areas of high environmental pollution. The decline within the last 2 years may be attributed to recent strict industrial preventive measures. However, a better environmental control programme would benefit Egypt.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between microvascular and macrovascular disturbances in patients with type 2 diabetes, as shown by results of ophthalmological examination and by vascular and perfusion examinations of the lower limbs. ⋯ Ophthalmological assessment of the progression of diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes is a reliable indicator of the changes in peripheral vessel systems and perfusion defects in the lower limbs.

Recent large clinical trials have yielded disappointing results of rosuvastatin in the chronic heart failure (CHF) population. The question that remains is whether these results of rosuvastatin studies could be extended to other statins. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis based on all currently available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the clinical efficacy of atorvastatin in CHF patients. ⋯ This meta-analysis suggests the effectiveness of atorvastatin treatment in reducing the risks of all-cause mortality and worsening CHF hospitalization in patients with CHF. Further large, well-conducted randomized trials are needed to confirm the benefits of atorvastatin or other statins for CHF relative to placebo or rosuvastatin.

Positive evolutionary pressure has preserved the ability to synthesize chemically authentic morphine, albeit in homeopathic concentrations, throughout animal phyla. The prototype catecholamine dopamine (DA) serves as an essential chemical intermediate in morphine biosynthesis both in plants and animals, thereby providing considerable insight into the roles reciprocal "morphinergic" and catecholamine regulation of diverse physiological processes. ⋯ Endogenous "morphinergic" in concert with NO-coupled signaling systems have evolved as autocrine/paracrine regulators of metabolic homeostasis, energy metabolism, mitochondrial respiration and energy production. Basic physiological processes involving "morphinergic"/NO-coupled regulation of cardiovascular mitochondrial function, with special emphasis on the interactive effects of ethanol, are discussed within the context of our review.

The aim of the research was to compare the dynamics of venous ulcer healing when treated with the use of compression stockings as well as original two- and four-layer bandage systems. ⋯ A systematic compression therapy, applied with preliminary blood pressure of 40 mmHg, is an effective method of conservative treatment of venous ulcers. Compression stockings and prepared systems of multi-layer compression were characterized by similar clinical effectiveness.
