Tensins belong to the family of adhesion proteins which form focal adhesions serving as a bridge between the extracellular matrix and intracellular actin skeleton. The tensin family consists of four members (tensin-1 to -4) which are widely expressed in normal and cancerous tissues. The presence of Src homology 2 and phosphotyrosine binding domains is a unique feature of tensins which enables them to interact with tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins in PI3K/Akt and β-integrin/FAK signaling pathways. ⋯ Recent findings and further research on tensins as therapeutic targets in cancers may contribute to identifying effective anti-cancer therapy. In this review we focus on the role of tensins in normal and cancer cells. We discuss potential mechanism(s) involved in carcinogenesis.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) constitute a growing class of non-coding genes with diverse cellular function. Recent studies have reported that lncRNA smooth muscle and endothelial cell-enriched (SENCR) was associated with the phenotype switch of vascular smooth muscle cells and participated in vascular homeostasis. However, the potential role of SENCR in endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) and the underlying mechanism remain unknown. ⋯ SENCR alleviates TGF-β-induced EndMT and sponges miR-126a expression via direct inhibition of the negative regulator of TGF-β/Smad signaling SMURF2.

Studies have shown long non-coding RNAs to be involved in a wide array of cancer-related processes. This study analyzed the role of LncRNA GAL1 in osteosarcoma cancer proliferation, migration and invasion of cancer cells. ⋯ Long ncRNA GASL1 inhibits the growth of osteosarcoma cancer cells. Cell apoptosis was promoted via inactivation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Taken together LncRNA GAL1 may prove to be a beneficial therapeutic target in the treatment of osteosarcoma.

Iron tests are deranged in sepsis; therefore new biomarkers should be used for diagnosis of iron deficiency (ID)/ID anemia (IDA). ⋯ Approximately half of sepsis patients are iron-deficient. Number of Rets may be a predictor of ID/IDA when Ret-He is not available. Hepcidin is a poor IDA predictor.

Because multi-drug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria have been isolated frequently worldwide and are difficult to treat, alternative treatment choices are required. Combination antibiotherapies have a distinct advantage over monotherapies in terms of their broad spectrum and synergistic effect. In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the in vitro activity of vancomycin combined with linezolid against clinical vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) strains with high-level aminoglycoside resistance. ⋯ The results of the study suggest that this combination may contribute to the treatment of VRE infections for their synergistic effect and because no antagonism was observed.
