The evaluation of the predictive value of the neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) for an early acute kidney injury (AKI) development in severely injured patients. Determination of the time-dependent roles of trauma-related physiologic markers of tissue hypoxia, systemic inflammation and rhabdomyolysis in AKI development. ⋯ Development of AKI after blunt trauma is very complex and multifactorial. Activation of the systemic inflammatory response and rhabdomyolysis (high concentration of myoglobin) were strongly involved in AKI development. Blood NGAL levels after injury were significantly higher in patients, who developed posttraumatic AKI. Plasma NGAL, lactate, procalcitonin, interleukin-6, and myoglobin had potential to be useful parameters for risk stratification and prediction of AKI after trauma (Tab. 6, Ref. 40).

Association of apelin and AF in patients with implanted loop recorders undergoing catheter ablation.
Previous studies showed an association between apelin and atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in patients with paroxysmal AF on plasmatic apelin concentrations. ⋯ Our study showed a significant increase in apelin levels after the reduction of AF burden via PVI and an inverse correlation with AF burden. Apelin might be a promising marker of AF (Tab. 2, Fig. 2, Ref. 28).

The failure of pancreatic anastomosis after the proximal pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) and the failure of pancreatic stump after the distal pancreatectomy with a resulting postoperative pancreatic fistula remain the most feared complications after pancreatic resection. Surgeons have been trying to find a reliable reconstructive technique of pancreatic anastomosis for decades. ⋯ Grade C POPF following PD, although uncommon, occurs with a defined incidence and is associated with a substantial morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, delayed recovery and a significant mortality. According to the results of various meta-analyses, pancreatogastrostomy and pancreatojejunostomy seemed to be comparable anastomotic techniques following PD (Ref. 54).

The effect of hyponatremia on the body is studied on model objects. The related question concerns the degree of compliance between manifestations of hyponatremia and protective mechanisms in humans and other species of vertebrates. ⋯ The data regarding mammals are fragmented and reflect the manifestation of protective mechanisms taking place during the initial period of hyponatremia. The method tested on freshwater fish allows for studying patterned changes in inorganic ions and content of organic osmolytes in the internal environment and cells of various organs and tissues of the body from the start of developing hyponatremia till the completion of the recovery process in vivo (Fig. 2, Ref. 72).

The purpose of this research was to examine the suppressing effect of caffeic acid (CA) on colon cancer cells triggered by an overdose of H2O2, and molecular mechanisms involved. ⋯ In light of all these findings, the antioxidant use should be paid attention to as it could decrease the level of ROS, and in turn decrease the apoptotic cell death which is an unwanted situation in the setting of cancer remedy. Overall, these data revealed that CA can suppress apoptosis in HT-29 cells triggered by an overdose of H2O2 (Fig. 5, Ref. 37).
