The occurrence of symptomatic spinal epidural hematoma after spine surgery is a rare, but serious major complication whose incidence usually requires urgent surgical intervention. Obesity is currently considered to be one of the most common metabolic diseases. ⋯ In our study, we found out that obesity is a significant risk factor for the incidence of postoperative SEDH after degenerative lumbar spine surgery (Tab. 1, Fig. 2, Ref. 18).

The AIM of our work is to point out the relationship between insulin resistance and metabolic compensation of diabetes mellitus, as well as to explore the possibilities of improving these parameters by non-drug measures. The rising incidence of insulin resistance associated with many comorbidities, especially due to the increase in obesity and unhealthy lifestyles, is a serious medical problem today. ⋯ Statistical analysis of our data showed a positive correlation between the assessed parameters of insulin resistance and metabolic compensation of diabetes with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.3156, and a decrease in glycated hemoglobin and insulin resistance after adjustment of dietary and regimen measures in 73.58 % of patients. Based on the above results, it is shown that non-drug measures are able to significantly improve the parameters of metabolic compensation of diabetes mellitus as well as those of insulin resistance (Tab. 4, Fig. 1, Ref. 18) Keywords: insulin resistance, TAG/HDL ratio, diabetes mellitus.

Lumbar spondylolisthesis is a relatively common cause of low back and lower extremity pain. The most common type, degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS), is a disease that causes stenosis of the spinal canal. Two surgical methods of treatment are widely accepted, namely posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). ⋯ This research found that both surgical techniques, TLIF and PLIF, are suitable for DLS treatment. The two methods differed in postoperative complications which were less frequent in TLIF. There were no significant differences in the postoperative quality of life (Tab. 5, Ref. 19). Studies assessing the unicentric and prospective comparison of efficacy of cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation in idiopathic and non-idiopathic atrial fibrillation (AF) patients are missing. The aim of this study was to compare a single procedural outcome in these subgroups of AF patients. ⋯ A single cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation was more effective in preventing atrial arrhythmias relapses in idiopathic AF patients compared to non-idiopathic AF patients. The best efficacy outcomes were observed in patients with paroxysmal idiopathic AF (Tab. 5, Fig. 2, Ref. 25).

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of two abundant dietary supplements, quercetin and vitamin C on some factors involved in metastasis and proliferation of prostate cancer, which are resistant to conventional chemotherapies in late stages. ⋯ Our results indicated the beneficial effect of quercetin and vitamin C on prostate cancer cells with different metastatic sites and their differential response to the treatment which in turn may lead us to reach suitable therapeutic outcomes to combat cancer (Fig. 3, Ref. 36).
