Hyperglycemia, oxidative stress and hyperlipidemia are features of diabetes mellitus. Thiamine has beneficial effects on carbohydrate metabolism and it was proposed that this vitamin has antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant effects. Our aim was to investigate the effects of thiamine on oxidative stress and metabolic changes in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. ⋯ Thiamine significantly improves oxidative stress and has hyperinsulinemic and antihyperlipidemic effects so we suggest that thiamine might be used as a supportive therapeutic agent in diabetes (Tab. 2, Fig. 3, Ref. 53).

The objectives of this study were to determine the prognostic value of expression levels of selected biomarkers and their statistical analysis in relation to survival and standard histopathologic examination and other clinicopathologic variables in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). ⋯ Low expression levels of Ki-67 and high expression levels of E-cadherin positively affect survival of patients, whereas aberrant expressions pose poorer prognosis (Tab. 2, Fig. 2, Ref. 33).

To determine whether there was a relationship between the neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR), monocyte//lymphocyte (MLR), and the platelet/lymphocyte ratios (PLR) measured in blood samples taken at admission and clinical outcomes (CO) on the 90th day in patients, who were diagnosed as acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in the emergency department (ED) and underwent a mechanical thrombectomy (MT). ⋯ We found that NLR, MLR, PLR values were associated with CO after 90 days; high rates were associated with poor CO and low rates were associated with good CO (Tab. 7, Ref. 38). The aim of this study is to evaluate the therapeutic effect of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a severe case of brain and multiple organ involvement in a patient with COVID-19. Here, a 51-year-old male patient with multi-organ involvement due to COVID-19 infection and developing cardiac arrest is presented. ⋯ In addition, transplantation of MSCs both systematically and intrathecally is considered to be effective in the treatment of the central nervous system (Tab. 2, Fig. 2, Ref. 24). The novel coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak quickly spread across many countries and has become a worldwide threat to health, trade and travel. In terms of clinical manifestations, although it starts as an acute respiratory disorder, it could eventually lead to death by causing damage to many organs such as: lung, liver, kidney and heart. It has been shown that COVID-19 pathology is mediated by an excessive inflammation, oxidation and an aggravated immune response. ⋯ Vitamin D has a high safety profile, and thus could be beneficial against multiple organ damage in COVID-19 patients. This paper aims to highlight the potential benefits of vitamin D against multiple organ damage caused by COVID-19 (Fig. 1, Ref. 109). Keywords: COVID-19, cytokine, inflammation, vitamin D.
