We aimed to characterize relationship between the expression profiles of platelet miR-96, miR-126 and miR-223 and platelet function examination in patients with sticky platelet syndrome (SPS) and in healthy controls. ⋯ In spite of the multiple limitations of the study, it can be considered that the increased expression of platelet miR-96 found in a group of patients with SPS and pregnancy complications could be related to the hyperaggregability in these selected patients (Tab. 2, Ref. 31).

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and its complications are among the most serious cardiovascular diseases and its occurrence has risen sharply in recent years. The aim of this pilot study is to explore the relationship between the methylation of matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors of the metalloproteinases genes' promoter region, and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) through the detection of the methylation status of MMP2, TIMP2, TIMP1, and MMP9 genes in peripheral blood. ⋯ In our pilot study, we found no association between DNA methylation of gelatinases and their tissue inhibitors, and the development of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 27).

Many studies use stimulated saliva for the assessment of cortisol. However, it is not yet clear how stimulation affects the flow of specific markers. The aim was to assess whether stimulation of salivation affects the physiological flow of cortisol during a stressing day as compared to an ordinary day. The second aim was to show how the normalising factor affects the outcome of the study. ⋯ Based on our results, the examination of the cortisol diurnal rhythm is not reliable in stimulated saliva. Moreover, the effect of saliva stimulation has to be taken into account for every marker individually (Fig. 2, Ref. 22).

Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 1 (TREM-1) is secreted by phagocytes in adipose tissue and it also upregulates the expression of genes involved in the inflammatory response and atherosclerotic conditions. This study was aimed to investigate the serum TREM-1 levels in overweight patients. ⋯ This study mainly demonstrated that a high serum TREM-1 level might be an early inflammatory marker in overweight patients. We found that TREM-1 might be associated with BMI in overweight patients regardless of insulin resistance (Tab. 1, Ref. 21). Text in PDF www.elis.sk.

To examine the relationship of clinical, biochemical and imaging parameters to maximum oxygen uptake in patients after atrial correction of transposition of great arteries. ⋯ An inability to increase heart rate during exercise noted in a considerable number of patients after atrial switch of TGA caused a decreased exercise tolerance. It is not solely the global systolic function of either ventricle that influences the exercise performance, rather it is the ability to increase heart rate and overall cardiac output appropriately (Tab. 3, Fig. 6, Ref. 28).
