The purpose of this study was to evaluate upper airway in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome patients and habitual snorers, and to determine the correlation with apnea-hypopnea index. ⋯ Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea patients results from changes in the upper airway. Anatomic and functional findings correlated with the apnea-hypopnea index. In the majority of patients with OSAHS, pharyngeal abnormalities and nasal obstruction were found to be statistically significant (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 14).

Repair of an inguinal hernia is one of the most common operations performed in general surgery with significant costs to health care and society. Lichtenstein mesh repair has been the most widely performed groin hernia repair. In this study, we wanted to emphasize the effectiveness of local anesthesia in groin hernia repair by single-surgeon's experience. ⋯ Lichtenstein mesh repair under local anesthesia is an effective day case technique, particularly in the elderly and medically unfit patients. The economic benefits are enhanced by low morbidity and low recurrence rates (Ref. 5). Full Text (Free, PDF) www.bmj.sk.

The purpose of this paper was to identify the impact of intoxicated road users upon the degree of responsibility for fatal road traffic accidents. ⋯ The degree of responsibility for fatal road traffic accidents was 1.5 times higher among intoxicated road users than among non-intoxicated road users. Alcohol is still the most abused psychoactive substance in Slovakia. The causes of its excessive consumption are the objectives of many larger studies. It is assumed that excessive alcohol consumption can be considerably attributed to its easy availability and lack of awareness and personal responsibility of road users (Tab. 4, Ref. 35).

The study was designed to identify any association between the sacral hiatus of the dry sacral bones with that of patients with low back pain (LBP). The knowledge of the sacral hiatus is important in caudal epidural block (CEB). ⋯ The patients with LBP had a higher percentage of deficient dorsal walls in comparison to the osteological findings (Fig. 12, Tab. 7, Ref. 12). Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a commonly used flavor enhancer in modern nutrition. It has been shown that administration of MSG induces toxic effects in various regions of brain, thymus, liver and kidney. Also, it is well-documented that Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has a protective role in MSG-induced cytotoxicity in rat liver, kidney and various brain regions, but has not been studied in thymus. ⋯ These results suggest that the treatment with Vitamin C may prevent the MSG-induced cytotoxicity in rat thymocytes by up-regulating Bcl-2 protein expression resulting in a change in Bcl-2/Bax protein ratio (Tab. 1, Fig. 1, Ref. 32).
