Randomized Controlled Trial
The use of controlled mild hypothermia and immune system status in patients with severe brain injury.
Severe brain injuries pose one of the most important problems on our health care because of their high morbidity and mortality. ⋯ Intensive treatment of intracranial hypertension fundamentally affects results of our treatment (Glasgow Outcome Score). The application of controlled mild hypothermia doesn't escalate the occurrence of extra cranial inflammatory complications after severe brain injury (Tab. 2, Fig. 11, Ref. 15).

Randomized Controlled Trial
Correlation between the aPTT and clinical events in acute coronary syndromes treated with unfractionated heparin.
The primary objective of this study is to analyse relationship between activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and clinical events in patients with unstable coronary artery disease. ⋯ The level of aPTT shows discordance with the onset of clinical events and is a weak predictor of outcomes (Tab. 2, Fig. 7, Ref 5).

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, widely spread in modern nutrition. Numerous recent studies have shown the existence of glutamic receptors on different nonneuronal cells, which among others also include lymphocytes and thymocytes. ⋯ These results indicate that MSG significantly modulates thymocyte proliferation by modulating the apoptosis rate of the cells. The temporal profile of Bcl-2 and Bax expression, after MSG treatment, suggest that down regulation of Bcl-2 protein and resulting change of Bcl-2/Bax protein ratio may be an important event in thymocyte apoptosis, triggered by MSG (Tab. 1, Fig. 3, Ref. 36).

Fractures of the metacarpals and phalanges are the most common fractures of the upper extremity. Hand fractures can be complicated by deformity because of no treatment, stiffness due to overtreatment, and both due to inappropriate treatment. "Boxer's" fractures of the fifth metacarpal neck are rarely seen in professional boxers, they are fare more common in people who hit solid objects such as walls. Controversy exists regarding the optimum treatment. ⋯ When all previous attempts to restore painless motion fail, arthrodesis of the joint becomes the method of choice. The most commonly arthrodesed finger joints are distal interphalangeal (DIP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP) and the interphalangeal (IP) joint of the thumb. The position of joint arthrodesis should be individual depending on the patient's needs. (Fig. 13, Ref. 6).

Severe impairment of lung functions in meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) often needs the application of combined therapeutic approach. In our recent study, surfactant lung lavage during asymmetric high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) removed more meconium than surfactant lavage during conventional ventilation, however, after the lavage excessive CO2 elimination was observed during HFJV. ⋯ Surfactant lung lavage by asymmetric HFJV followed by conventional ventilation is advantageous combination in rabbits with MAS and may be tested in neonatal MAS (Tab. 2, Fig. 2, Ref. 12).
