Purpose of this study was to evaluate properties of apelin, a peptide detectable in peripheral blood, for atrial fibrillation (AF) detection in a diverse population of patients covering a broad spectrum from healthy to polymorbid patients. ⋯ Apelin might be a promising biomarker for detecting AF in our study population. These results suggest promising potential of apelin as a screening biomarker for AF (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 46). Text in PDF www.elis.sk Keywords: biomarker, apelin, arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation.

Prothrombotic tendency is characteristic of tumors. The aim of the study is to investigate the changes in the laboratory parameters for coagulation and fibrinolysis, namely in fibrinogen, thrombin-antithrombin complex (ТАТ), tissue factor (ТF), prothrombin fragment (F1+2), antithrombin III (AT III), D-dimer and screening coagulation tests in cancer patients before initiation of chemotherapy. ⋯ Higher levels of TF, ТАТ, F1+2, fibrinogen and D-dimer and lower activity of АТ III in cancer patients support our hypothesis of an association between malignant disease and coagulation disorders. Cancer patients are at an increased risk of thrombosis wherefore antithrombotic prophylaxis may be considered (Tab. 6, Fig. 2, Ref. 34). Fibronectin (Fn) is a glycoprotein of extracellular matrix produced by a variety of mesenchymal and neoplastic cell types. ⋯ Herein, we confirm our previously published hypothesis about the origin of adult human "glia-like" cells, which we consider to be precursor cells scattered through the brain cortex and subcortical white matter. Cultures were comprised entirely of GFAP-/Fn+ "glia-like" cells and showed morphological and immunochemical astroglial differentiation with spontaneously decelerated growth during prolonged passaging. We propose that the adult human brain tissue contains a "dormant population" of undefined glial precursor cells. Under culture, these cells show to have a high proliferative capacity and different stages of cell dedifferentiation (Fig. 2, Ref. 21).

Abdominal obesity, usually measured by waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio, is more closely related to metabolic dysfunctions that are associated with cardiovascular diseases than general obesity, which is usually assessed by body mass index. The purpose of our study was to study the distribution of alleles and genotypes AGTR1, AGТ, LPL and ADRB2 among adolescents of the Kazakh population and to identify the relationship of these genes with predictors of obesity. ⋯ It was also found that the G allele of the rs328 polymorphism of the LPL gene reduces the risk of abdominal obesity. Therefore, in addition to determining BMI, we recommend determining the ratio WV to HP. It was found that an increase in the ratio of WV/HV by 1 cm increases the chance of developing hypoapolipoproteinemia A1 (Tab. 4, Fig. 1, Ref. 23). Text in PDF www.elis.sk Keywords: obesity, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, AGTR1, AGТ, LPL, ADRB2.

To analyse prenatal and postnatal characteristics, clinical and laboratory findings, results of investigations in the group of 11 newborns with congenital CMV infection, who were hospitalized at Neonatal Department of Intensive Medicine between January 1st 2012 and March 31st, 2022 were included. ⋯ The results of analysis will contribute to a society-wide solution of prevention. Monitoring of the frequency of CMV infection in the population with education of the population can decrease the number of affected newborns (Tab. 4, Ref. 29).
