The usefulness of echocardiographic characteristics for dementia prediction in patients with heart failure decompensation (HFD) is not determined. Therefore, we sought to investigate the echocardiographic features of patients with HFD and screening diagnosis of dementia (SDD). ⋯ Apart from age, RWT reflecting left ventricular geometry changes but not hypertrophy was independently but moderately associated with SDD in patients following HFD (Tab. 4, Fig. 1, Ref. 35).

The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus strains to commercial phage preparations. The strains were isolated from clinical patients as well as from nasal mucosa of healthy carriers. ⋯ In vitro results indicate a promising therapeutic potential of the tested commercial anti-staphylococcal phage preparations. They could be applied to a broad spectrum of bacterial clones, and have an excellent activity especially against MRSA strains (Tab. 2, Fig. 2, Ref. 43).

The association of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has been studied for over 60 years, yet their causal relationship has not been elucidated. Most published papers report a better prognosis of the patients with tumour in the field of thyroiditis. In our work we aimed to find out the differences in the clinical behaviour of PTC depending on the presence of autoimmune inflammation. ⋯ AIT alone does not have a protective effect on the course of PTC, the cause of a better prognosis in the AIT1 subgroup is a different pathomechanism of carcinogenesis, as well as previous endocrinological monitoring and earlier detection of malignancy (Tab. 4, Fig. 2, Ref. 27).

Artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay. It is not a future anymore, and there are many particular problems in cardiology that are already being solved via machine learning (ML), and many more are to come. ⋯ However, cardiologists who will not be able to use ML algorithms in their clinical practice will be replaced by those who will. (Fig. 2, Ref. 50). Keywords: artificial intelligence, cardiology, potential machine learning, survival models, classification algorithms, computer vision, automated analysis of various imaging examinations, ECG interpretation, phenotype clustering, pathophysiological mechanisms.

Myocardial infarction is a life-threatening complication of the coronary artery disease - the leading cause of premature death worldwide. The severity of this condition is the result of cellular death following the myocardial ischaemia, which occurs via several mechanism including apoptosis. For the research of this condition, animal models are often employed. ⋯ Previous research demonstrated that by experimentally affecting proapoptotic and antiapoptotic signals, it is possible to influence various aspects of myocardial infarction including: infarction size, cardiac remodelling and prognosis of the heart failure. Future research is warranted to fully elucidate the role of this process during myocardial infarction, which will result in refined diagnostic and therapeutic strategies (Tab. 1, Fig. 1, Ref. 21). Keywords: myocardial infarction, isoprenaline, apoptosis, necrosis, BCL-2, BAX.
