Clinical and neurophysiological description of patients with POEMS syndrome.
POEMS syndrome (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal protein, skin changes) is a monoclonal gammopathy with polyneuropathy as a mandatory criterion. ⋯ Electrophysiological patterns are unlikely to have a clear extra-neurological clinical correspondence; however, this will have to be definitively proven with a larger sample size.

Ophidian accident is a global public health problem. In Mexico, there is a high incidence of snakebites, which cause medical complications that can leave severe sequelae. ⋯ Epidemiological analyses allow a better local, state and regional understanding of the problem, in order to develop efficient action protocols to face an ophidian accident, as well as to determine the training requirements of medical personnel and establish a support network for the treatment of cases.

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have a higher prevalence of insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) than controls. ⋯ In non-diabetic women with SLE, the prevalence of IR based on Quantose-IR score was 64.2%.

Family history of thyroid disease (FHTD) constitutes a possible risk factor for congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in the general population; however, FHTD possible relationship with CH in subjects with Down syndrome (DS) has not yet been explored. ⋯ Newborns with DS and FHTD have an eight-fold higher risk for CH, particularly when the index case is male. FHTD detailed evaluation can be an easy and accessible strategy to identify those newborns with DS at higher risk for CH.

Sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPases (SERCA) enzymes are essential for intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis. SERCA genes (ATP2A1-3) encode for different functional isoforms of the protein, whose expression or function is altered in several types of cancer, such as gastric and oral, as well as colon, breast, lung, thyroid, liver, and prostate cancer, among others. However, the role played by SERCA pumps in carcinogenesis is unknown. ⋯ SERCA expression might function as a tool to differentiate breast cancer subtypes, which have different treatment requirements.
