Haemophilia care in Taiwan has come a long way over the past 35 years, from the absence of specialised haemophilia treatment centres before 1984 to the establishment of treatment centers in the majority of medical centers, the listing of haemophilia as a catastrophic illness with full treatment reimbursement by the Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI), and the implementation of full NHI coverage for prophylaxis therapy. This has led to outcome improvements such as reduced bleed-related morbidity and mortality, fewer viral infections, and enhanced overall multi-modality care. ⋯ Efforts are now being made to raise prophylaxis rates through full NHI reimbursement and the use of extended half-life recombinant factor products. Overall, Taiwan has made great strides in haemophilia care and we would like to share these experiences for the benefit of all healthcare providers involved in haemophilia care.

Genetic and environmental factors play significant roles in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Recently, 17 novel risk loci of PD were identified in a meta-analysis of genome-wide association study (GWAS) in the European populations. In order to clarify if these risk loci are associated with PD in Taiwanese population, we conducted a case-control study including 14 of the novel risk loci and analyzed the genetic distribution and allele frequency. ⋯ This study suggests that ITPKB, IL1R2 and COQ7 have influence on the risk of PD in Taiwan.

The first mucopolysaccharidosis type VII in a Taiwanese girl: A case report and review of the literature.
The present study included the first case of mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type VII in Taiwan. During pregnancy, the patient was diagnosed with hydrops fetalis and had ascites aspiration 4 times. In the following years, she presented gradually with chronic lung disease, developmental delay, short stature, dysmorphic features of coarse face, macroglossia and pigeon chest with scoliosis. ⋯ Afterward, the molecular analysis showed two heterozygous genetic variants of c.104C > A and c.1454C > T in trans in the GUSB gene (NM_000181.4) which were the causes for MPS VII. Then, we checked the leukocyte β-glucuronidase activity for MPS VII and showed extremely low, therefore confirmed the diagnosis. Clinicians should increase the awareness on the early signs of MPS to have a prompt diagnosis and offer the correct treatment like enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) as early as possible.

Efficacy of a novel walking assist device with auxiliary laser illuminator in stroke Patients~ a randomized control trial.
Task-oriented functional walking is important in stroke patients. We aimed to investigate effects of a quad-cane with auxiliary laser illuminator (laser-cane) among stroke patients. ⋯ Rehabilitation with laser-cane improved the balance, activity of daily living, gait symmetry and gait parameters of stroke patients.

Decorin is a small leucine-rich proteoglycan rich in extracellular matrix with potential antitumor activity. However, the role of decorin in hematological malignancies remains unclear, especially in the case of multiple myeloma (MM), a bone marrow (BM) stroma-dependent plasma cell neoplasm. ⋯ Our findings suggest that decorin may exert protective effects in this subset of MM patients.
