Viruses-bacteria synergistic interaction is associated with destructive periodontal diseases. However, the underlying mechanism for tissue destruction is not fully elucidated. In this study, lipopolysaccharide from Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg-LPS) and polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) were used to simulate bacteria and viruses, respectively. The possible combined effects of both molecular patterns on secretion of interleukin (IL)-6 and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) from osteoblasts were determined. The effects of povidone-iodine (PVP-I) on the secretion of IL-6 and PGE2 were also examined. ⋯ Concomitant infection of viruses and bacteria may be potentially harmful to the tooth supporting tissues by production of proinflammatory mediators. The results suggest the potential anti-inflammatory effect of PVP-I on bacterial or viral infection.

Actually, many individuals have opted for the vegetarian diet. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the vegetarian diet on the oral epithelium through cytopathology. ⋯ Despite the small sample size, the results of this study raise the hypothesis that the vegetarian diet (especially the vegan diet) can compromise the thickness of the oral epithelium of the tongue.

Efficacy and safety data of heterologous prime-boost vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 remains limited. ⋯ Heterologous ChAdOx1/mRNA-1273 vaccination provided higher immunogenicity than homologous ChAdOx1 vaccination and comparable immunogenicity with the homologous mRNA-1273 vaccination. Our results support the safety and efficacy of heterologous prime-boost vaccination using the ChAdOx1 and mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccines. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT05074368).

Genetic and environmental factors play significant roles in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Recently, 17 novel risk loci of PD were identified in a meta-analysis of genome-wide association study (GWAS) in the European populations. In order to clarify if these risk loci are associated with PD in Taiwanese population, we conducted a case-control study including 14 of the novel risk loci and analyzed the genetic distribution and allele frequency. ⋯ This study suggests that ITPKB, IL1R2 and COQ7 have influence on the risk of PD in Taiwan.

The risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is reduced but not eliminated after nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA) therapy in chronic hepatitis B (CHB). We aimed to investigate the role of serum Prothrombin Induced by Vitamin K Absence or Antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) and alpha-fetoprotein in predicting HCC and mortality in cirrhotic CHB patients at virological remission (VR) following NA therapy. ⋯ In patients with CHB-related cirrhosis, serum alpha-fetoprotein >7 ng/mL and PIVKA-II >50 mAU/mL at the time of antiviral therapy-induced VR is associated with a greater risk of HCC. PIVKA-II is a predictive marker for HCC in patients with low normal alpha-fetoprotein level.
