Therapeutic Effects of Bipolar Coagulation Forceps on Open Thyroid Surgery.
The aim was to compare the therapeutic effects of bipolar coagulation forceps, harmonic scalpel, and conventional thyroidectomy on open thyroid surgery. ⋯ The effects of bipolar coagulation forceps on open thyroid surgery exceeded those of the harmonic scalpel and conventional thyroidectomy. This method is worthy of promotion in clinical practice.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Secondary to Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09: Clinical Characteristics and Mortality Predictors.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus is the leading cause of death among this patient population. Expanding the knowledge of its course and predictors of mortality is relevant to decision making. We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and identify factors associated with mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 during the 2013-2014 influenza season. ⋯ We described the clinical characteristics and course of a cohort of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, and developed a predictive model of mortality based on the covariates age, levels of lactate dehydrogenase, and white cell count on admission to the respiratory intensive care unit.

Clinical, Dialytic, and Laboratory Factors Associated With Poor Health-Related Quality of Life in Mexican Patients on Hemodialysis.
End-stage renal disease and its treatment have a negative impact on the quality of life of patients. ⋯ Poor health-related quality of life was common in Mexican patients undergoing hemodialysis. No strong correlation was found between the clinical, dialytic, or laboratory factors with health-related quality of life. Factors associated with poor health-related quality of life were: time on hemodialysis, use of a venous catheter, and serum albumin level < 4 g/dl.

Intra-arterial chemotherapy is a novel therapeutic modality for retinoblastoma patients. Intra-arterial chemotherapy involves the administration of a super-selective drug through the ophthalmic artery, resulting in better ocular penetration and low systemic toxicity. ⋯ Super-selective intra-arterial chemotherapy is safe and effective for preventing the enucleation of 55% of affected eyes in this group of patients.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic, progressive, and usually fatal lung disorder of unknown etiology. The disease likely results from the interaction of genetic susceptibility architecture, environmental factors such as smoking, and an abnormal epigenetic reprogramming that leads to a complex pathogenesis. ⋯ Recently, nine molecular and cellular hallmarks of aging have been proposed: genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, deregulated nutrient sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, and altered intercellular communication. In this review, we provide an overview of these molecular mechanisms and their involvement in the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, while emphasizing that the studies on this disease are few and the findings are not definitive.
