Black bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a very common legume seed in Mexican diet. Flavonoids and crude extracts from different plants have been reported as effective agents for chemoprevention and cytotoxicity in several cancer cell lines. We investigated the effects of black bean hulls extract (BBE) and its flavonoid fraction (FF) on lymphoma cells. ⋯ BBE and FF had cytotoxic action by driving OCI-Ly7 cells into apoptosis as well as blocking progression to G2/M phase. In addition, BBE and FF treatments were effective in xenograft models.

Intra-abdominal adhesions and their complications following abdominal surgery are serious problems, with an incidence of 67-93%. Prevention of peritoneal adhesion formation may eliminate the need for surgical intervention, decreasing complications, morbidity, and cost. Bevacizumab is a recombinant monoclonal antibody which specifically binds vascular endothelial growth factor, an important cytokine in adhesion formation, and neutralizes its biological activity. We developed an experimental model in rats to determine the effect of bevacizumab in preventing adhesion formation and analyzed its effect both micro- and macroscopically. ⋯ Bevacizumab was effective in preventing intraperitoneal adhesion formation in our study; however, its inhibitory effects on embryogenesis and the hematopoietic, endocrine, and immune systems may limit its clinical use.

Differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into Schwann cell precursors could reverse established lesions and sequelae of medullary transection. ⋯ Schwann precursor cells had a greater effect on locomotive function than mesenchymal stem cells.

There are many factors that can influence surgical site infections (SSI) in cholecystectomies. Incidence of cholecystectomy SSI was studied and compared with the incidence in Madrid Region, Spain, and the United States. ⋯ SSI incidence rates among cholecystectomized patients at our hospital are higher than rates in the United States. A laparoscopic route protected against SSI.

Acute cerebral infarction (ACI) and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) are potentially lethal cerebrovascular diseases that seriously impact public health. ACI and ICH share several common clinical manifestations but have totally divergent therapeutic strategies. A poor diagnosis can affect stroke treatment. ⋯ This study confirmed that metabolomic analysis is a promising tool for rapid and timely stroke differentiation and prediction based on differential metabolites.
