To evaluate the diagnostic performance of waist to height ratio (WHtR) to screen for cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Saudis. ⋯ Between June 2013 and August 2014, a cross-sectional study of 3,063 adult Saudis of both genders from King Khalid Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was conducted. Using the "WHO STEPwise Surveillance-Instrument V2.1", which uses sequential steps including questionnaires and anthropometric and biochemical measurements of MetS and CVRF. Waist to height ratio validity in defining central obesity, MetS, and CVRF were tested using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy. Using multivariate regression analyses for adjustment of confounders as age and gender were applied to compute adjusted odds ratios (aOR). Results: The diagnostic potential of WHtR was excellent for central obesity (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.98), and MetS (AUCs = 0.86); it was good for CVRF ≥2 (AUCs = 0.79) and was satisfactory for dyslipidemia (AUCs = 0.66). The sensitivities and negative predictive values exceeded 85% for diagnosing central obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Adjusted odds ratios for age and gender showed that WHtR ≥0.50 significantly increased the risk of diabetes, hypertension, and ≥2 CVRF by almost 4-fold, and increased the risk of dyslipidemia by 2-fold. Conclusion: Waist height ratio showed a good diagnostic performance for CVRF and MetS among Saudis. Furthermore, WHtR ≥0.5 increased the risk of dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and hypertension.

To determine whether distance from a cochlear implant (CI) center can influences the ages of presentation and intervention for CI, which thus may influence CI outcomes in Saudi Arabia. ⋯ In Saudi Arabia, distance from CI center does not have a significant effect on age of presentation for CI intervention.

To examine the influence of socioeconomic factors, anxiety, depression, and personality traits on the decision to undergo breast reconstruction (BR) post mastectomy. ⋯ Age and depression significantly influenced the decision to undergo BR. Women who had opted for BR tended to be younger, be less depressed, and be characterized by lesser nodal involvement. Personality traits also influenced the decision to undergo BR. Diagnosing and treating depressed patients is an important component. A patient's age should not deter physicians from counselling them about BR.

To assess obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) comorbidity and obsessive-compulsive symptom (OCS) dimensions in patients with schizophrenia. ⋯ Patients with schizophrenia should be evaluated for presence of the OCS/OCD comorbidity in clinical practice. In addition, dimensional assessment of OCS might provide a different viewpoint on the presence of OCS/OCD in schizophrenia.

To assess the effect of seminal redox status on lipid peroxidation (LPO), apoptosis and integrity of sperm DNA in infertile males. Methods: In this case-control study, the total antioxidant status (TAS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were analyzed within the seminal plasma of fertile normozoospermic, n=40 and infertile (asthenozoospermic, n=30; oligoasthenoteratozoospermic, n=30) males. Additionally, the level of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), DNA fragmentation, and caspase-3 activity were estimated in the spermatozoa. ⋯ Significantly (p less than 0.001) increased seminal ROS level with decreased TAS scores was observed in the infertile groups compared to normozoospermics. The infertile males showed marked elevated (p less than 0.001) levels of 4-HNE, DNA fragmentation and caspase-3 activity compared to normozoospermics, which was positively correlated to increased seminal ROS levels and negatively to the TAS score in the studied groups. Seminal ROS level was significantly inverse correlated to the semen parameters. Additionally, a strong negative correlation between DNA fragmentation, LPO, caspase-3activity and seminal parameters were observed. Conclusion: Seminal oxidative stress is a potential risk factor for LPO, DNA damage, and apoptosis in spermatozoa, which can affect semen quality and male fertility. Thus, in addition to conventional seminological parameters, measurement of seminal oxidative stress and sperm DNA integrity may also be employed to investigate the functional integrity of spermatozoa at the molecular level.
