To measure the frequency and identify risk factors of depression and anxiety among diabetic and hypertensive primary health care (PHC) patients. Also to assess whether patients' perception of their chronic diseases control and sleep disturbance could serve as screening tools for depression and anxiety. Methods: This cross-sectional study of 368 PHC patients was conducted in AlKhobar city, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between April and May 2015. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 were used as diagnostic tools for depression and anxiety. Results: Frequencies, cross-tabulations and logistic regression tests were performed. ⋯ Co-existence of both disorders was 29.5%. Sleep disturbance, weight change, and low income had an independent significant effect on depression and anxiety. Conclusion: Having no sleep disturbance can rule out 98.9% of depression and anxiety cases. Patient's feelings should be considered in chronic diseases health care plans. Depression or anxiety among diabetic and hypertensive patients have a high morbidity, but with low detection rate.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is an acute inflammatory lung injury, characterized by increased pulmonary capillary endothelial cells and alveolar epithelial cells permeability leading to respiratory failure in the absence of cardiac failure. Despite recent advances in treatments, the overall mortality because of ARDS remains high. Biomarkers may help to diagnose, predict the severity, development, and outcome of ARDS in order to improve patient care and decrease morbidity and mortality. This review will focus on soluble receptor for advanced glycation end-products, soluble tumor necrosis factor-receptor 1, Interluken-6 (IL-6), IL-8, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, which have a greater potential based on recent studies.

To study serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance to beta-lactams and macrolides in pneumococci causing respiratory diseases after the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This is a hospital-based and a cross-sectional prospective surveillance study conducted at King Fahad Hospital of the University, AlKhobar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in which respiratory pneumococcal isolates collected between 2012 and 2014 were serotyped by multiplex sequential polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Pneumotest-Latex. Resistance genes to beta-lactams and macrolides were detected by multiplex PCR. Results: The most common serotypes encountered were 11A, 19A, 17F, 23F, 3, and 19F, representing 64% of the typeable strains. Interestingly, 24% of the 94 isolates were not typeable and 18% were negative for the housekeeping gene cpsA. ⋯ The high rate of resistance genes did not significantly differ according to serotype (p=0.76). Similarly, non-typeable pneumococci (cpsA+ and cpsA-) had high rates of resistance to both penicillin (62.5%) and macrolides (47%). Conclusion: These data highlight the emergence of a previously rare capsular type, 11A (mean patient age, 29 years; p=0.001). Moreover, the high percentage of non-typeable isolates shows the emergence of possible atypical pneumococcal serotypes not covered by available vaccines.

Lymphatic metastasis is an important event in the progress of metastasis in colorectal cancer (CRC). The purpose of this article is to assess the role of lymphangiogenesis on CRC. In peritumoral areas of CRC, the lymphatic microvessel density (LMVD) is higher than those in normal colorectal tissues. ⋯ Inhibition of the VEGF-C/VEGF-D/VEGFR-3 pathway by specific antibodies has been reported to efficiently inhibit experimental tumor lymphangiogenesis and metastasis in animal experiments. Although lymphangiogenesis has been reported to play an important role in the occurrence of colon cancer and to be associated with prognosis, it remains unclear whether it is a valid therapeutic target molecule. Further study of the potential of targeting this process for anti-lymphatic therapies is worthwhile.
