The effect of sacrospinous ligament fixation during vaginal hysterectomy on postoperative de-novo stress incontinence occurrence: A prospective study with two-year follow up.
To investigate the risk of de novo stress urinary incontinence (SUI) occurrence in women who were treated for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) with sacrospinous ligament fixation (SSLF) in addition to vaginal hysterectomy (VAH) and antero-posterior colporrhaphy (CAP) over a 24-month follow-up period. ⋯ In patients undergoing surgery for POP, the addition of SSLF did not result in an increased rate of de novo SUI. Careful patient selection, and informing the patients about the risks and benefits of the planned surgical procedure are essential steps in each case of POP.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates if not diagnosed and treated rapidly. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between levels of hypoxia-induced factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) and clinical course and prognosis in patients with intermediate low-risk, intermediate high-risk, and high-risk PE. ⋯ HIF-1α can be used in the PE clinical risk stratification and monitoring of PE and may also serve as a valuable early indicator in intermediate high-risk PE, for which early reperfusion therapy is important.

β1-selective beta-blockers (BBs) are sympatholytic agents, and discerning their effects on bone health would be of great importance. This study aimed to investigate the influence of β1-selective BBs on bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk. ⋯ Based on our results, β1-selective BB usage was associated with higher BMD at the lumbar region in postmenopausal women.

Neurotrophins are one of the most important molecule groups affecting cerebral neuroplasticity. The amount of evidence about the role of changes in neuroplasticity in the pathophysiology of bipolar disease is growing. ⋯ The changes in the levels of GDNF, IGF-1 and Nrn 1 might be involved in pathopysiology of bipolar disorder, and GDNF, IGF-1 may be considered as state markers in bipolar manic episode.

Sensitivity and symptoms related to animal proteins have been investigated in various occupational groups. However, data from horse farm workers are limited. We aimed to determine horse allergen sensitivity in the horse farm workers, and to evaluate its relationship with respiratory symptoms and functional parameters. ⋯ Atopy and animal allergen sensitization were significantly higher in horse farm workers, suggesting the relationship between the intensity of specific allergen exposure and the sensitization to this specific allergen.
