Since 2004, Minnesota has seen an influx of refugees from Burma. Many of these newcomers came from the Karen state and spent time in refugee camps in Thailand before resettling in the United States. ⋯ Paul family medicine clinic that serves a number of Karen refugees and reviewed formal data from the Minnesota Department of Health's Refugee Health Program. Here, they briefly describe this community, the cultural issues that could affect health care providers' ability to care for Karen patients, and the health concerns of these refugees.

Direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising: history, regulation, and issues.
Direct-to-consumer advertising has changed the way prescription drugs are marketed in the United States. This article traces the history of direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription and over-the-counter medications and describes how drug advertising is regulated and by whom. It also discusses the controversies that surround direct-to-consumer marketing of prescription drugs.

A short history of health care reform: Minnesota Medicine's perspective, 1934-1967.
From 1934 through 1967, Minnesota Medicine published a section called Medical Economics. The editors used the section to address the politics and economics of health care and health insurance by excerpting news items, reprinting opinion pieces, and contributing original material to inform and influence the readership. This article reviews the history of health care reform and organized medicine's response to it as reflected in this section of the journal.
