ReviewThe interplay between muscle mass decline, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
The world's population is progressively becoming older, and age‑related conditions are a major public health concern. A worrying phenomenon worldwide is the increasing obesity among aging societies, which occurs in parallel with a higher prevalence of sarcopenia in older populations. As a result of the combination of these 2 states, new medical conditions, such as sarcopenic obesity, have recently become a public health concern. ⋯ The mechanisms underlying sarcopenic obesity are multifactorial. There is an interplay between low‑grade inflammation, insulin resistance, hormonal changes, a sedentary lifestyle, eating habits, and aging. The aim of this review is to summarize the available data regarding the definition, epidemiology, and pathways that lead to sarcopenic obesity, as well as treatment strategies.

Comparative StudyChronic kidney disease is associated with increased levels of renalase in serum and decreased in erythrocytes.
Renalase is a novel flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent amine oxidase with catecholamine-degrading activity. The kidneys are the main source of this enzyme. ⋯ Our results indicate that serum renalase concentrations are elevated in patients with CKD, whereas renalase concentrations in urine and erythrocytes are correlated with impaired kidney function.

Genetic heterogeneity of indeterminate thyroid nodules assessed preoperatively with next-generation sequencing reflects the diversity of the final histopathologic diagnosis.
Inconclusive cytologic results of thyroid fine‑needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) include atypia or follicular lesion of undetermined significance (FLUS) and follicular neoplasm or suspicious for follicular neoplasm (SFN). ⋯ We showed that the heterogeneity in the genetic background of indeterminate thyroid nodules corresponds to their histopathologic diversity. The role of KDR as a possible malignancy marker needs to be confirmed. Glass slides with FNAB samples may constitute a reliable source of genetic material for NGS studies, providing a better insight into the molecular profile of thyroid nodules.

Epicardial, paracardial, and perivascular fat quantity, gene expressions, and serum cytokines in patients with coronary artery disease and diabetes.
Obesity and diabetes mellitus (DM) are common disorders that increase cardiovascular risk and lead to coronary artery disease (CAD). ⋯ Patients with multivessel CAD and DM revealed increased volume and more dysfunctional profile of gene expressions in EF and significantly decreased expression of cardioprotective FGF21.
