[Sensitization to ascaris lumbricoides and asthma severity in children].
There is little information concerning asthma severity and sensitization to Ascaris lumbricoides in pediatric patients. ⋯ Sensitization to Ascaris lumbricoides is associated with increased severity of asthma among Romanian children. This association is mediated by a high degree of atopy among the asthma children sensitized to Ascaris lumbricoides and belonging to a population with a low prevalence of helminthiasis.

[Upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis: current concepts in diagnosis and treatment].
Upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis is a rare manifestation of venous thromboembolic disease. In the past few decades, the clinical importance of upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis has increased because of the wider use of central venous catheters and the development of ultrasonography as a simple and accurate objective diagnostic method. Primary upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis is a rare disorder (2 per 100,000 persons per year), which comprises (1) Paget-Schroetter Syndrome, also known as effort thrombosis, and (2) idiopathic upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis. ⋯ Contrast venogram is the standard diagnostic test for characterization of the anatomy. A staged, multimodal approach to Paget-Schroetter Syndrome can effectively restore venous patency, reduce the risk of rethrombosis, and return the patient to normal function. Primary care physicians should be aware of this condition and its atypical presentations, because delayed recognition in a high-functioning persons can be potentially disabling.

This article presents the results of a study on 20 children diagnosed with acute renal failure and treated with renal substitution methods at the Iasi IVth Clinic of Pediatric Nephrology in the interval 2003-2008. Treatment by intermittent hemodialysis IHD), peritoneal dialysis (DP), and continuous replacement--hemofiltering (HF) depends on the patient's features and unit resources. The advantages and limitations of every method of treatment are discussed. Future therapies for acute renal failure may find strategies for eliminating the inflammatory response.

[Total parathyroidectomy without autotransplantation in the management of "refractory" renal hyperparathyroidism].
The optimal surgical treatment in patients with refractory renal hyperparathyroidism (RHP) on hemodialysis for end stage renal disease is still a point of controversy. The high percentage of recurrences after standard surgical procedures i.e. subtotal parathyroidectomy (SPTx) and total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation (TPTx + At) reactualised the practice of total parathyroidectomy (TPTx). ⋯ TPTx alone proves to be an equally safe and successful as another techniques currently used in management of RHP eliminating the hyperparathyroid status but being superior with regard to aparition of recurrences. The procedure is indicated especially in cases with aggressive, refractory forms of RHP without the prospect of renal transplantation.

Historical Article[Roman medical instruments from Lower Moesia].
To elucidate the evolution of society over time, ancient medicine is a very interesting and important researching field. Archaeological discoveries, such as the objects described by this article, but other ancient sources, also, are able to provide a complex framework of medical practice in Roman times. ⋯ Most likely, we have a mixed medical kit with tools used in general medicine, surgery, in preparation of the pharmaceutical treatments, but very possible, also, in cosmetic practices. Publication of these archaeological materials is, in addition to an extra page in the history of ancient medicine, a pretext for stepping up in a research field that, in other regions of the former Roman Empire, it is a great interest for researchers.
