Comparative Study[Study of 3 hypervariable loci in a mixed Chilean population].
Genetic markers are useful to study evolution parameters in populations and to determine kinship. ⋯ All three loci had a high efficiency for genetic identification tests according to the estimated a priory exclusion probability.

[Thromboembolic risk factors in atrial flutter. Transesophageal echocardiographic study].
The thromboembolic risk of atrial flutter (AFL) is not well defined. On the other hand, in atrial fibrillation (AF), the echocardiographic demonstration of thrombus or spontaneous echo contrast in the left atria or its appendage, a lower flow velocity in the left atrial appendage, and its reduced mobility, are well known risk factors of thromboembolism. ⋯ In AFL, there are echocardiographic markers of increased thromboembolic risk in comparison with a control group. Nevertheless, the incidence of these factors is lower than in patients with AF or with RSEMS.

Case Reports[Efficacy of gemcitabine in the gallbladder cancer. Initial experience in 4 cases].
Surgery continues to be the only curative therapy for gallbladder cancer, but useful in very few patients. Mean survival of patients with gallbladder cancer, that are out of the reach of surgery, is 3 months. The few clinical trials of chemotherapy for this disease, report very low success rates. ⋯ In all patients, symptoms were alleviated, functional status and quality of life improved. Toxicity was mild and did not require reduction in doses or delay in therapy. Therefore, this medication deserves further investigation for the treatment of gallbladder cancer.

Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical Trial[Treatment of hirsutism with spironolactone and with spironolactone plus dexamethasone].
Spironolactone has an anti androgenic effect, inhibiting the binding of androgens to their receptor. This antagonistic effect is the basis for the use of spironolactone in the treatment of hirsutism. ⋯ Spironolactone is effective and safe in the treatment of hirsutism. Androgenic supression did no increases its effectiveness, underscoring the peripheral anti androgenic activity os spironolactone.

[Prevalence of anti-hantavirus antibodies in health care personnel in direct contact with patients with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in Temuco, Chile 1997 to 1999].
An outbreak of Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HVCS) caused by the Andes virus, affected Chile since 1995. Antibodies to Hantavirus in health care workers who had cared patients with HVCS in Coybaique, Argentinean reports and familial clustering of bantaviral illness, raised the possibility of person to person transmission. Familial clustering could occur secondary to a similar exposure to a common infected environment of more than one member of the family. Moreover, the prevalence of antibodies in health care workers in Coyhaique does not differ from the prevalence in general population in that region. ⋯ These results are supporting evidence against person to person transmission of the Andes virus.
