Case ReportsAberrant course of Swan-Ganz catheter revealing persistent left superior vena cava.
The presence of a persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is the most common congenital disorder of thoracic venous anomaly. Failure of the left anterior cardinal vein to degenerate results in persistent left superior vena cava. ⋯ In this article, we present a case with PLSVC revealed by chest roentgenogram after pulmonary artery catheterization via left internal jugular vein. We also discuss the role of computed tomography in the diagnosis of PLSVC.

Comparative StudyEndotracheal tube position in pediatrics and neonates: comparison between flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy and chest radiograph.
Correct tracheal intubation in critically ill patient is very important in intensive care medicine. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the value and accuracy of the flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FFB) in confirming the endotracheal tube (ETT) position and to compare with the chest radiograph method in intubated pediatric and neonate patients. ⋯ FFB is an accurate, convenient, timesaving and less traumatic technique in confirming the correct ETT position for the critical and emergent patients in the pediatric and neonate ICUs.

The diagnostic role of serum transferrin receptor in patients with various anemia.
Serum ferritin is known as a good tool to diagnose iron status. Recently the soluble serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) has been introduced as a promising new tool for diagnosing iron depletion. The present study was to compare the differential diagnostic values of sTfR and other related parameters in different causes of anemia. ⋯ sTfR is a new diagnostic tool to distinguish patients with anemia. Its diagnostic ability can further improve in combination with serum ferritin, transferrin saturation and other related parameters.

Case ReportsSuperior mesenteric arteriovenous fistula associated with portal obstruction.
Superior mesenteric arteriovenous fistula is rarely encountered. Unrecognized in early stage, it can cause hazardous sequelae of portal hypertension. Herein we report a rare case of portal obstruction associated with an aneurysmal dilatation of the superior mesenteric vein, which was caused by a superior mesenteric arteriovenous fistula. ⋯ When complicated with portal obstruction, the condition can be disastrous. We believe that creation of a porto-systemic shunt with resection of the arterio-venous fistula is the proper treatment. This patient is now under close observation.

Characteristics of patients at a Taipei summer rock concert festival.
Rock concerts are popular mass gatherings in Taiwan. Millions of fans participate in rock concerts in Taiwan each year. However, there were no reports on the characteristics of the patients seen in rock concerts in Taiwan. ⋯ By this preliminary data, first reported in Taiwan, we found that the most common problem was fainting. More than half of the cases seen at the concert required advanced life support. A well-designed emergency medical service (EMS) system is mandatory to provide services for these events.
