In the motor system there is a complex interplay between cortical structures and spinal cord lower motor neurons (LMN). In this system both inhibitory and excitatory neurons have relevant roles. LMN loss is a marker of motor neuron disease/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (MND/ALS). ⋯ The importance of FPs has been recognized in the Awaji criteria for the electrodiagnosis of ALS, criteria that are a sensitive adjunct to the revised El Escorial criteria. Finally, functionality of LMN's, and perhaps excitability studies in motor nerves, aids understanding of the disease process, allowing measurement of potential treatment effects in clinical trials. Other investigational techniques, such as electrical impedance myography, muscle and nerve ultrasound, and spinal cord imaging methods may prove useful in future.

To evaluate the prognostic value of single EEG patterns recorded at various time-frames in postanoxic comatose patients. ⋯ Standard EEG can provide time-dependent reliable indicators of good and poor outcome throughout the first 48-72h after cardiac arrest.

Multicenter Study Observational Study
Changes in electrocorticographic beta frequency components precede spreading depolarization in patients with acute brain injury.
Spreading depolarization (SD) occurs after traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, malignant hemispheric stroke and intracranial hemorrhage. SD has been associated with secondary brain injury, which can be reduced by ketamine. In this present study frequency bands of electrocorticographic (ECoG) recordings were investigated with regards to SDs. ⋯ Alteration of beta frequency might help to predict occurrence of SDs in acutely brain injured patients.

To investigate the use of nerve ultrasound in the differentiation between Charcot-Marie Tooth hereditary neuropathy (CMT1) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathies (CIDP), multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) and multifocal acquired demyelinating sensory and motor neuropathies (MADSAM). ⋯ By the use of quantitative scores, ultrasound differentiation of demyelinating neuropathies is operationalized and ameliorated compared to CSA measurements only.
