The effect of a novel vaginal ring delivering oestradiol acetate on climacteric symptoms in postmenopausal women.
Evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of a novel vaginal ring delivering oestradiol acetate (Menoring) versus oral oestradiol for relief of climacteric symptoms in postmenopausal women. ⋯ The oestradiol vaginal ring significantly improved climacteric symptoms as measured by Greene Climacteric Scale scores and reduced the frequency of hot flushes/night sweats. Efficacy and safety of vaginal ring oestradiol were comparable with those of oral therapy. Patient evaluations of oestradiol vaginal ring tolerability and acceptability were excellent.

Differences in perinatal mortality and suboptimal care between 10 European regions: results of an international audit.
A European concerted action (the EuroNatal study) investigated the background of differences in perinatal mortality between countries of Europe. The study aimed to determine the contribution of differences in quality of care, by looking at differences in the presence of suboptimal factors in individual cases of perinatal death. ⋯ The findings of this international audit suggest that differences exist between the regions of the 10 European countries in the quality of antenatal, intrapartum and neonatal care, and that these differences contribute to the explanation of differences in perinatal mortality between these countries. The background to these differences in quality of care needs further investigation.

Combined ultrasound and biochemical screening for Down's syndrome in the first trimester: a Scottish multicentre study.
To evaluate the use of ultrasound measurements of fetal nuchal translucency (NT) obtained in a routine antenatal clinic setting in combination with appropriate biochemical markers as a first trimester screening test for Down's Syndrome. ⋯ NT in combination with appropriate serum markers has the potential to detect over 80% of Down's Syndrome fetuses in early pregnancy. However, NT measurement is highly operator-dependent. It requires training, external quality control and adequate time to allow accurate measurement, otherwise suboptimal performance will result.

Spontaneous contractions of myometrium from humans, non-human primate and rodents are sensitive to selective oxytocin receptor antagonism in vitro.
To determine whether: 1. oxytocin receptor antagonists influence spontaneous contractions of myometrium from humans, non-human primates and rodents (in vitro), and 2. vasopressin V1a receptor antagonism is important for inhibition of spontaneous contractions in human myometrium. ⋯ Spontaneous contractions of myometrium from humans, marmosets and rats are, at least in part, dependent on oxytocin receptor activity, in vitro. L-371,257 and atosiban may be inverse agonists. Selective non-peptide oxytocin receptor antagonists may be effective tocolytics.

Women's views on the practice of prenatal perineal massage.
To determine how women who practised perineal massage during pregnancy assessed the technique. ⋯ Overall, women's assessment of prenatal perineal massage is positive.
