Radiographic measurement of the cervical spine in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction.
To compare the craniocervical angles and distances between temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and free TMD subjects. ⋯ It could be verified that the symptomatic TMD patients presented a flexion of the first cervical vertebra associated with an anteriorization of the cervical spine (hyperlordosis).

Comparative StudyTrigeminal pain and quantitative sensory testing in painful peripheral diabetic neuropathy.
To evaluate patients with Diabetes Mellitus type 2 and painful peripheral neuropathy in order to investigate oral complaints and facial somatosensory findings. ⋯ There was a high prevalence of orofacial pain and burning mouth was the most common complaint. The association of loss of pain sensation and higher glycemia and glycated hemoglobin can be of clinical use for the follow-up of DM complications.

Cardiovascular and muscle activity during chewing in whiplash-associated disorders (WAD).
The present study aimed to elucidate possible physiological mechanisms behind impaired endurance during chewing as previously reported in WAD. We tested the hypothesis of a stronger autonomic reaction in WAD than in healthy subjects in response to dynamic loading of the jaw-neck motor system. ⋯ More intense response to chewing in WAD might indicate pronounced vulnerability to dynamic loading of the jaw-neck motor system with increased autonomic reactivity to the test. Premature termination and autonomic involvement without EMG signs of muscle fatigue may indicate central mechanisms behind insufficient endurance during chewing.

Molecular characterization of Streptococcus mutans strains containing the cnm gene encoding a collagen-binding adhesin.
Streptococcus mutans, known to be a major pathogen of dental caries, is also considered to cause infective endocarditis. Its 120-kDa Cnm protein binds to type I collagen, which may be a potential virulence factor. In this study, we characterized S. mutans clinical strains focusing on the cnm gene encoding Cnm. ⋯ Our results indicate that strains with cnm genes, the most crucial factor for the collagen-binding property of S. mutans, are detectable at similar frequencies over several different geographic locations. In addition, the common properties of these strains are a high level of collagen-binding activity and tendency for a low level of glucan-binding activity.

Involvement of medullary dorsal horn glial cell activation in mediation of masseter mechanical allodynia induced by experimental tooth movement.
To investigate the involvement of microglial and astrocytic activation in the medullary dorsal horn (MDH) during the mediation of masseter area allodynia induced by experimental tooth movement (ETM). ⋯ These results indicate that mechanical allodynia in the masseter area induced by ETM can be attenuated by minocycline. Activation of microglia, possibly together with subsequent activation of astrocytes, seems to contribute to masseter mechanical allodynia.
