Task-dependent functional connectivity of pain is associated with the magnitude of placebo analgesia in pain-free individuals.
Task-based functional connectivity (FC) of pain-related regions resulting from expectancy-based placebo induction has yet to be examined, limiting our understanding of regions and networks associated with placebo analgesia. ⋯ This article provides support and insight for task-dependent functional connectivity differences related to the magnitude of placebo analgesia. Our findings provide key support that the magnitude of expectation-based placebo response depends on the coupling of regions associated with somatosensory and attentional processing.

Post-intubation analgesia and sedation following succinylcholine vs. rocuronium in the emergency department.
Succinylcholine and rocuronium are the most commonly utilized neuromuscular blocker agents (NMBAs) for rapid sequence intubation (RSI) in the emergency department (ED). The duration of action of rocuronium is significantly longer (∼30 min) compared to succinylcholine (∼10 min) and previous studies have shown that patients receiving rocuronium are more likely to have longer time to sedation initiation following RSI. Furthermore, patients receiving rocuronium may be more likely to experience awareness with paralysis than those receiving succinylcholine. The primary goal for this study was to evaluate the association between NMBA use during RSI and post-intubation sedation and analgesia practices in the ED. ⋯ While no differences were observed in the time to initiation of post-intubation sedation or analgesia in ED patients receiving succinylcholine compared to rocuronium, differences in the intensity of post-intubation regimens was observed. Further investigation is needed to evaluate the adequacy of sedation following RSI in the ED.

Randomized Controlled TrialBilateral Ultrasound-Guided Mid-Point Transverse Process to Pleura Block for Perioperative Analgesia in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Study.
Mid-point transverse process to pleura (MTP) block is a new regional analgesia technique. This study aimed to assess the perioperative analgesic effects of MTP block in children undergoing open-heart surgery. ⋯ Single-shot bilateral ultrasound-guided MTP block in children undergoing cardiac surgery reduced the mean fentanyl consumption in the first postoperative 24 hours, intraoperative fentanyl requirements, pain score at rest, time to extubation, and duration of ICU stay.

Nighttime Sedations in the Pediatric Emergency Department: A Single-Center Experience.
Procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) is the standard of care for many procedures in the pediatric emergency department (PED). Although generally performed by skilled PED physicians, in Israeli PEDs, during nighttime hours, it is mainly performed by pediatric residents. The safety of PSA by residents is considered comparable yet has not been evaluated regarding nighttime performance. ⋯ Sedations performed during nighttime hours by pediatric residents seem safe and effective. This should strengthen the empowerment of residents to perform sedations when necessary even at late hours of the night. Recognizing cases at higher risk may avoid possible AEs.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of 0.15% ropivacaine alone and combination with sufentanil on epidural labor analgesia and adverse reactions.
The aim of this study was to compare the impacts of 0.15% ropivacaine alone and 0.15% ropivacaine combined with sufentanil on epidural labor analgesia. ⋯ 0.15% ropivacaine alone achieves a comparable epidural labor analgesia effect to that of 0.15% ropivacaine + 0.05 µg/mL sufentanil on primiparae.
