Coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a pandemic infectious disease that causes morbidity and mortality. As a result of high mortality rate among the severe COVID-19 patients, the early detection of the disease stage and early effective interventions are very important in reducing mortality. Hence, it is important to differentiate severe and nonsevere cases from each other. To date, there are no proven diagnostic or prognostic parameters that can be used in this manner. Due to the expensive and not easily accessible tests that are performed for COVID-19, researchers are investigating some parameters that can be easily used. In some recent studies, hematological parameters have been evaluated to see if they can be used as predictive parameters. ⋯ Our findings indicate that, the parameters those enhanced from complete blood count, which is a simple laboratory test, can help to identify and classify COVID-19 patients into non-severe to severe groups.

Factors associated with prolonged hospitalization among patients transported by emergency medical services: A population-based study in Osaka, Japan.
The emergency medical system, one of the essential elements of public health, has been around for more than 50 years. Although many studies have assessed the factors associated with overcrowding and prolonged length of stay in emergency departments, whether the clinical characteristics and background of a patient are associated with prolonged hospitalization among patients transported by ambulance is unknown. The purpose of this study was to reveal factors associated with the continuation of hospitalization at 21 days after hospital admission among patients transported by ambulance using a population-based patient registry in Osaka, Japan. ⋯ We included 481,886 patients in this study, of whom 158,551 remained hospitalized at 21 days after hospital admission and 323,335 had been discharged home by 21 days after hospital admission. Factors associated with prolonged hospitalization were elderly (AOR: 1.767 [95% CI: 1.730-1.805]), traffic accident (AOR: 1.231 [95% CI: 1.183-1.282]), no fixed address (AOR: 4.494 [95% CI: 3.632-5.314]), need for nursing care (AOR: 1.420 [95% CI: 1.397-1.443]) and solitary person (AOR: 1.085 [95% CI: 1.050-1.120]). In this study, the elderly, traffic accidents, no fixed address, need for nursing care, and solitary person were associated with prolonged hospitalization of patients transported by ambulance in Japan.

Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Most deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, with the incidence predicted to increase as populations undergo socioeconomic and epidemiological changes. Knowledge of contributing factors in a South African (SA) population can be used to drive healthcare initiatives to modify this burden of disease. ⋯ Stroke is an important healthcare concern for SA. Our study demonstrated a lower mean age of patients presenting with stroke compared with high- and upper middle-income countries, and a higher proportion of haemorrhagic strokes. Several modifiable risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes were identified. Data collection on a regional and national level is important to drive targeted healthcare initiatives.

Acute diverticulitis (AD) is a common disease with various outcomes. When AD is diagnosed in the emergency department (ED), the ED clinician must determine the patient's treatment strategy whether the patient can be discharged, needs to be admitted to the general ward, ICU, or needs surgical consultation. This study aimed to identify potential risk factors for clinically important outcomes (CIOs) and to develop a prediction model for CIOs in AD to aid clinical decision making in the ED. ⋯ A prediction model for clinically important outcomes of AD visiting a single ED showed good discrimination and calibration power with an acceptable range.
