Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a severe postoperative complication associated with poor clinical outcomes, including the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and death. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and determinants of AKI following elective surgeries for degenerative lumbar spine disease. ⋯ Findings of this study inform risk stratification for AKI and may help to optimize treatment decisions and care planning after elective surgery for lumbar degenerative disease.

Behavioral health disorders (BHDs) can often be exacerbated in the setting of cancer. We sought to define the prevalence of BHD among cancer patients and characterize the association of BHD with surgical outcomes. ⋯ BHD was associated with lower likelihood to achieve a postoperative textbook outcome, higher expenditures, as well as worse prognosis. Initiatives to target BHD are needed to improve outcomes of cancer patients undergoing surgery.

Neurosurgical research is a rapidly evolving field, with new research topics emerging continually. To provide a clearer understanding of the evolving research landscape, our study aimed to identify and analyze the prevalent research topics and trends in Neurosurgery. ⋯ Our study underscores the dynamic nature of neurosurgical research and the evolving focus of the field. The insights derived from the analysis can guide future research directions, inform policy decisions, and identify emerging areas of interest. The use of natural language processing in synthesizing and analyzing large volumes of academic literature demonstrates the potential of advanced analytical techniques in understanding the research landscape, paving the way for similar analyses across other medical disciplines.

To describe the complications and the outcome of patients with achondroplasia undergoing thoracolumbar spinal surgery. ⋯ Patients with achondroplasia, the most common skeletal dysplasia condition with short-limb dwarfism, are burdened with a congenitally narrow spinal canal and are commonly in need of spinal surgery. However, surgery in these patients is often associated with complications, namely dural tears and post-decompression kyphosis. Despite these complications, patients benefit from surgical treatment at a follow-up of 2 years after surgery.

The role of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in patients with brain metastases (BMs) from colorectal cancers (CRCs) has not been established. The authors present a single-institution experience of patients with CRC who underwent SRS with metastatic brain spread. ⋯ SRS effectively controls BMs from CRC with low risk of treatment-related toxicity. During follow-up, the development of additional metastases can be safely treated by repeat SRS.
