Impact of anastomotic leakage on survival after surgery for gastric carcinoma: A PRISMA systematic review and meta-analysis.
The long-term survival of postoperative anastomotic leakage (AL) following gastric cancer (GC) surgery is still debating. Our aim was to investigate the association between AL and survival of the patients following GC. ⋯ Postoperative AL was correlated with a worse OS in GC patients, but not correlated with DFS in GC patients, but more studies are required to confirm this conclusion.

To investigate sex differences in the titles and lifestyles of Japanese ophthalmologists, we evaluated work places and private lives. Retrospective cross-sectional study. The study included 1721 members (1344 males and 377 females) of the Japanese Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. ⋯ There were no significant differences in daily sleep duration. Both sexes were equally satisfied with their career choice of ophthalmology; however, fewer females recommended ophthalmology as a career for students and children compared to males. There are significant sex differences among ophthalmologists in Japan in terms of family responsibilities; this topic has received insufficient attention.

The survival rate is significantly reduced in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) who developing a second primary malignancy (SPM), and however, little has known about the factors that contribute to the mortality of SPMs among CRC survivors. This study aims to explore the influence factors in both the all-cause and cancer-specific mortality of patients with SPMs after CRC surgery. Data of adult CRC patients with SPMs were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database in this retrospective cohort study. ⋯ In addition, colon (23.5%) was the most common site of SPMs, followed by digestive system (19.0%), and the time interval between CRC and SPMs in most patients was over 5 years (28.4%). Our findings may assist clinicians to identify high-risk patients for SPMs after CRC surgery. Also, the postoperative long-term follow-up and close attention on the key systems where the SPMs may occur are of great necessary in patients with CRC.

Retroperitoneal non-organ-originated malignancies are rare pediatric tumors with challenging diagnosis and treatment. The present study aimed to analyze the clinicopathological characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of retroperitoneal non-organ-originated malignancies. In the study, we included the pathological diagnosis of pediatric retroperitoneal non-organ-originated malignant tumors between 2000 to 2019 through the updated Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. ⋯ Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the main treatment methods for children unable to undergo complete surgical treatment. However, these treatments do not reach the same therapeutic effect as complete tumor resection after early diagnosis. Hence, early diagnosis and surgery for complete tumor resection are of utmost importance.

Reducing Unnecessary Oophorectomies for Benign Ovarian Neoplasms in Pediatric Patients.
Although most ovarian masses in children and adolescents are benign, many are managed with oophorectomy, which may be unnecessary and can have lifelong negative effects on health. ⋯ Unnecessary oophorectomies decreased with use of a preoperative risk stratification algorithm to identify lesions with a high likelihood of benign pathology that are appropriate for ovary-sparing surgery. Adoption of this algorithm might prevent unnecessary oophorectomy during adolescence and its lifelong consequences. Further studies are needed to determine barriers to algorithm adherence.
