Expression of lncRNAs NEAT1, PACERR, and GAS5 can be associated with disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have long been considered molecular noise within the transcriptome, but over time it has been shown that they perform many important biological functions and are associated with various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). ⋯ Circulating plasma lncRNAs may be considered as supporting molecular markers associated with RA activity and may be useful in identifying disease exacerbation.

In this study, we have mapped the relative importance of well-defined recombinantly expressed Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens in the T-cell recognition repertoire of latently infected individuals not progressing to active disease. ⋯ We have identified a defined set of M. tuberculosis antigens frequently recognized by T cells at a high response level from latently infected long-term non-progressors which warrant further investigation for a potential role in immune regulation and protection against progression to active disease.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death from infectious diseases worldwide. Military personnel are particularly vulnerable to TB because of the factors like deployments to endemic regions and close-quarters living. This study aims to compare the characteristics and outcomes of symptomatic TB cases between military and civilian patients treated at 2 French military hospitals, with a specific focus on diagnostic delay. ⋯ Tuberculosis presentation and outcomes in military and civilian patients were generally comparable. Early diagnosis remains essential to minimize disease severity and operational impact, particularly in military settings.

A core objective of U.S. medical services is to ensure the medical and dental readiness of military personnel. Oral diseases, resulting in pain, infection, or functional impairment, greatly affect the operational effectiveness of military personnel. This study aimed to compare the current causes of dental emergencies and the rates of dental disease nonbattle injuries in a deployed setting with those documented in previous research. Additionally, the study sought to determine if these rates have decreased because of preventive measures or potential improvements in overall oral health. ⋯ The results of this study confirm that dental emergencies continue to be a threat to overall readiness in deployed environments. The primary etiologic factor in the current study was as a result of tooth fracture and/or caries.

Apolipoprotein L1 gene (APOL1) variants are risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) among Black Americans. Data are sparse on the genetic epidemiology of CKD and the clinical association of APOL1 variants with CKD in West Africans, a major group in the Black population. ⋯ In this study, monoallelic APOL1 variants were associated with 18% higher odds of CKD and 61% higher odds of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis; biallelic APOL1 variants were associated with 25% higher odds of CKD and 84% higher odds of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.
