Comparative Study
[Practicability of a German version of the "Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire". A questionnaire to assess disability caused by back pain].
While caring for patients with chronic low back pain, a standardized measurement of pain and pain-related reduction of the quality of life is needed. Easy application and data collection are decisive for routine use. ⋯ A higher pain disability was related to age, female gender, limitations experienced in social life, impact of pain, use of analgetics, low net income, and patients in Eastern Germany. The available German version of the questionnaire is suitable for daily use to measure the intensity of pain and pain-related disability in everyday life, including social impairment due to low back pain.

Review Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Examining heterogeneity in meta-analysis: comparing results of randomized trials and nonrandomized studies of interventions for low back pain.
Literature review. ⋯ Comparisons between RCTs and NRSs may be influenced by various factors, including study design. However, other factors were more powerful explanatory variables than study design. These factors included pain duration, involvement of workers' compensation, presence of spondylolisthesis, previous surgery, and levels fused.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialInvestigation of elevated fear-avoidance beliefs for patients with low back pain: a secondary analysis involving patients enrolled in physical therapy clinical trials.
Secondary analysis. ⋯ The FABQ work scale was the better predictor of self-report of disability in this sample of patients participating in physical therapy clinical trials. Future studies are necessary to further test and refine the FABQ work scale as a screening tool alone, and in combination with other examination findings.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of normal and degenerative lumbar intervertebral discs: a new method to potentially quantify the physiologic effect of physical therapy intervention.
Observational, repeated measures design. ⋯ The ADC of the nuclear region of the lumbar IVDs may be reliably measured from diffusion-weighted images. Degenerative discs had lower mean ADC values than normal discs but demonstrated greater variation between scans. Diffusion-weighted imaging may be a useful procedure to assess change in diffusion of water in lumbar discs that occurs over time.

The cost of low back pain (LBP) to employers is high, with an estimated pound 9090 million lost in the United Kingdom in 1998. Economic analysis of LBP has focused on work absence among the employed. There is little research characterising individuals who report reduced duties or who are not in employment because of LBP. ⋯ These findings indicate that the economic impact of LBP may be higher than previously estimated when data on reduced duties is combined with work absence. The additional impact of unemployment due to LBP should also be included in future assessments of the impact of LBP on the workforce.
