Virtual reality distraction during pediatric intravenous line placement in the emergency department: A prospective randomized comparison study.
To evaluate the efficacy of virtual reality distraction (VR) during intravenous line (IV) placement in a pediatric emergency department to increase first-attempt IV success. Secondary endpoints included median time to successful IV placement, patient pain and anxiety scores, and an evaluation of characteristics of patients in whom VR is well tolerated. ⋯ VR distraction for IV placement in the Pediatric Emergency Department shows similar efficacy to standard distraction techniques and appears to be well tolerated.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyCulture-sensitive and standard pain neuroscience education improves pain, disability, and pain cognitions in first-generation Turkish migrants with chronic low back pain: a pilot randomized controlled trial.
Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of culture-sensitive and standard pain neuroscience education (PNE) on pain knowledge, pain intensity, disability, and pain cognitions in first-generation Turkish migrants with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Methods: Twenty-nine Turkish first-generation migrants with CLBP were randomly assigned to the culture-sensitive (n = 15) or standard PNE (n = 14) groups. Primary (pain knowledge, pain intensity, and disability) and secondary outcomes (pain beliefs, catastrophization, and fear of movement) were evaluated at baseline, immediately after the second session of PNE (week 1), and after 4 weeks. ⋯ Nevertheless, the superiority of the culture-sensitive PNE approach could not be proved. Therefore, maybe migrants who are living in the host country for longer length of time do not need culturally adapted therapies due to cultural integration, while these adaptations might be essential for the recent migrants or the autochthonous population in Turkey. Further research is required to investigate the effects of culture-sensitive PNE alone or in combination with physiotherapy interventions in recent migrants or Turkish natives with CLBP.

The effectiveness of intradermal sterile water injection for low back pain in the emergency department: A prospective, randomized controlled study.
Low back pain (LBP) is a common musculoskeletal complaint among emergency department (ED) admissions. In this study, it was aimed to compare the effectiveness of systemic treatment with intradermal sterile water injection (ISWI) treatment protocol combined with systemic therapy in patients with LBP of unclear chronicity. ⋯ In this unblinded study, ISWI with systemic therapy improved pain outcomes more than systemic therapy alone. Further research is needed to determine whether this was due entirely to placebo effect.

Efficacy and safety of acupuncture treatment as an adjunctive therapy after knee replacement: Single-center, pragmatic, randomized, assessor blinded, pilot study.
Total knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure that is being increasingly performed as a result of population aging and the increased average human life expectancy in South Korea. Consistent with the growing number of TKR procedures, the number of patients seeking acupuncture for relief from adverse effects, effective pain management, and the enhancement of rehabilitative therapy effects and bodily function after TKR has also been increasing. Thus, an objective examination of the evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of acupuncture treatments is essential. The aim of this study is to verify the hypothesis that the concurrent use of acupuncture treatment and usual care after TKR is more effective, safe, and cost-effective for the relief of TKR symptoms than usual care therapy alone. ⋯ This trial has received complete ethical approval from the Ethics Committee of Catholic Kwandong University International St. Mary's Hospital (IS17ENSS0063). We intend to submit the results to a peer-reviewed journal and/or conferences.
