Primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors are rarely reported and extremely blurry to diagnose, especially in the case of a confirmed diagnosis of colon cancer and a family history. Here we report such a case followed by our experiences and lessons. ⋯ Hepatic neuroendocrine tumors exhibited no specific symptoms, signs or imaging manifestations, mainly relying on immunohistochemistry for diagnosis, which makes it difficult to be distinguished from other liver masses and metastatic tumors, especially interfered by a confirmed diagnosis of colon cancer and a family history. In this regard, more rigorousness is required in the diagnosis and treatment of liver tumors.

This systematic review explores the most current evidence regarding the mechanisms of neuropathic pain in patients with different types of diabetes and how this pain affects different functional and structural components of the neuroanatomical pain pathways. The review also seeks to provide guidelines for the best approach and treatment for patients experiencing this type of pain. The objective is to determine the effectiveness of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) in improving functional and symptomatic outcomes in patients with diabetes mellitus type I and type II. ⋯ In comparison to the use of a placebo, the findings suggest that ALA does not exhibit significant differences in terms of pain reduction and different functional scales. Moreover, no specific dosages are identified to support the use of ALA for the reduction of neuropathic pain.

Use rates of cannabis, a substance associated with a host of comorbid physical and mental health concerns, continue to rise for military veterans. Despite this prevalence, descriptive patterns of use among veterans and research on treatment factors that predict cannabis outcomes are lacking. This study aimed to conduct a descriptive profile of veterans who endorse cannabis use, compare veterans endorsing cannabis use to those who do not endorse use, and investigate what factors (other substance use, psychiatric symptoms, and treatment outcomes) predicted return to cannabis use following residential treatment. ⋯ Identification of relevant risk factors and treatment processes, such as impulse control, confidence in treatment, and length of stay in treatment, provides practical recommendations for future intervention efforts. This study calls for further examination of cannabis use outcomes among veterans, particularly those participating in substance use treatment.

A growing number of studies have shown that gut microbiota (GM) plays an essential role in the occurrence and development of colorectal cancer (CRC). The current body of research exploring the relationship between CRC and GM is vast. Nevertheless, bibliometric studies in this area have not yet been reported. ⋯ Newly emerging research has focused predominantly on immune response, gene expression, and recent strategies for the treatment of CRC with GM. The relationship between GM and CRC will continue to be a hot research area. Changes in the composition of GM in patients with CRC, the potential molecular mechanisms as well as probiotics and natural products used in the treatment of CRC have been the focus of current research and hotspots for future studies.

Wisdom teeth are a frequent cause for dental disease and nonbattle injuries (D-DNBIs) during expeditionary deployments. Improved diagnosis and timely treatment before deployment can reduce the need to evacuate a D-DNBI while in a theater. This study proposed key identifiers to diagnose wisdom teeth as Dental Readiness Classification (DRC) 3. ⋯ This study proposed DRC 3 criteria for wisdom teeth and measured concurrence among dental providers' diagnoses. Dental Readiness Classification 3 criteria include caries, pericoronitis, infection, and pathology. A Cohen's κ of 0.04 indicated there was a lack of concurrence in examining dentists compared to the DRC 3 criteria. Caries and pericoronitis were the most frequent diagnoses for third molars. Early diagnosis and treatment of these key identifiers can help reduce a significant source of D-DNBIs in the deployed environment.
