During the financial year 2021/2022, the PANORAMIC study utilised the primary care setting to provide vital research into oral antivirals for COVID-19, recruiting more than 26 000 participants. Alongside the relentless work conducted by practices in supporting vaccine research, the number of GPs recruiting to National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) portfolio studies in England remains consistently around 45% year on year despite the support offered by the NIHR. This figure varies across regions, falling to 23% in Greater Manchester, and rising to 95% in Northwest London, in 2022/2023. These figures suggest a regional inequality in access to potentially life-changing research from primary care providers. ⋯ Knowledge gained from these activities will help inform researchers and research organisations, such as the NIHR, to provide support and opportunities for GPs across England, ensuring that more of the population has access to clinical research opportunities through their GP.

New onset or worsening of a headache disorder substantially contributes to the disease burden of post-COVID-19. Its management poses a suitable means to enhance patients' participation in professional, social, and personal activities. Unfortunately, the pathophysiology of post-COVID-19 headaches is poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the role of (neuro-) inflammatory mechanisms in order to guide the development of anti-inflammatory treatment strategies. ⋯ This study provides evidence that worsened or new headaches following COVID-19 are associated with pro-(neuro-)inflammatory profiles. This supports the use of anti-inflammatory treatment options in this population, especially in the subacute phase.

Impact of the Early COVID-19 Pandemic on Emergency Department Visits of Adult Cancer Patients With Fever or Respiratory Symptoms: A Korean Nationwide Population-Based Study, 2016-2020.
We performed a nationwide analysis to evaluate the impact of the early coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on emergency department (ED) visits by adult cancer patients having COVID-like symptoms. ⋯ Further studies are needed to highlight the importance of ED service preparation in planning and managing resources for cancer patients during future pandemics.

Objective To survey the epidemiology of respiratory pathogens during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Methods Specimens were assayed using multiplex nested PCR. Materials Specimens were obtained from outpatients who presented with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection and asymptomatic outpatients who had contact with patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection at Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University Hospital in Sendai, Japan, from November 1, 2020, to May 31, 2023. ⋯ We identified a larger number of SARS-CoV-2-positive specimens in patients ≥10 years old. In contrast, in patients 0-9 years old, we identified a larger number of specimens positive for rhinovirus/enterovirus than for other viruses. Conclusion In this study, we examined the epidemiology of circulating respiratory pathogens during the COVID-19 pandemic era.

To determine whether there is a causal relationship between Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and glaucoma, a 2-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) design was applied with the main analysis method of inverse-variance-weighted. The reliability of the results was checked using the heterogeneity test, pleiotropy test, and leave-one-out method. ⋯ The sensitivity of the results was acceptable (P > .05) for the 3 test methods. In conclusion, this MR analysis provides preliminary evidence of a potential causal relationship between COVID-19 and glaucoma.
