The purpose of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of perioperative oral managements (POMs) on perioperative nutritional conditions in patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed and the effects of POMs were investigated based on a large number of cases using a multicenter analysis. The profile of serum albumin levels was assessed and compared between patients with and without POMs using the multivariate analysis. ⋯ Patient gender, age, surgical site, performance status, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification, operation time, amount of blood loss, and serum albumin level at admission were also significant predictors. Adjusted multivariate analysis of the effects of POMs on perioperative change of serum albumin level in all subjects reveled the significance of POMs intervention (estimate: 0.022, standard error: 0.012, P < .0001). These results suggest that POMs exerts significant positive effects on perioperative serum albumin levels in patients underwent surgery under general anesthesia.

Sacral fracture is the most frequent posterior injury among unstable pelvic ring fractures and is prone to massive hemorrhage and hemodynamic instability. Contrast extravasation (CE) on computed tomography (CT) is widely used as an indicator of significant arterial bleeding. However, while CE is effective to detect significant arterial bleeding but negative result cannot completely rule out massive bleeding. ⋯ The fibrinogen levels on admission can predict contrast extravasation on enhanced CT in patients with sacral fractures. The optimal cut-off value of fibrinogen for CE(+) prediction in sacral fracture was 199 mg/dL. The use of fibrinogen to predict CE(+) could lead to prompt and effective treatment of active arterial hemorrhage in sacral fracture.

With the evolving specialization of modern medicine, family medicine (FM), also known as general practice, is relatively late in being recognized as a formal specialty in most countries of the world. Because many non-FM specialists were recruited into the new specialty in the early stages of FM specialization, the contents of FM specialty journals might, to an extent, reflect the development of the FM specialization. ⋯ In conclusion, FM publications in China in the study year, as exemplified by Chinese General Practice, were mostly contributed by non-FM authors dealing with non-FM topics. A transition to more FM-oriented development might be anticipated in the near future.

Increasing evidence has indicated immune-related genes (IRGs) play a key role in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Whereas, there have been no investigations proposing a reliable prognostic signature in terms of IRGs. This study aimed to develop a robust signature based on IRGs in HCC. A total of 597 HCC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) databases were enrolled in this study. ⋯ This study developed a robust immune-related risk signature and built a predictive nomogram that reliably predict overall survival in HCC, which may be helpful for clinical management and personalized immunotherapy decisions.

Although some studies have reported the expression and clinical significance of phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (p-STAT3) in breast cancer tissues, it is still controversial whether p-STAT3 play a role in promoting or suppressing cancer. Here, we used immunohistochemistry analysis to explore expression of p-STAT3 in 407 cases of breast cancer, and analyzed the relationship between p-STAT3 expression and the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of breast cancer patients. ⋯ In this study, no clear relationship was observed between patients' prognosis and expression of p-STAT3. Therefore, we suggest that p-STAT3 expression in breast cancer is negatively correlated with tumor size and HER2 status, but appears to have no effect on survival.
