ReviewWidespread use of toxic skin lightening compounds: medical and psychosocial aspects.
Hyperpigmentation disorders and skin lightening treatments have a significant impact on the dermatologic, physiologic, psychologic, economic, social, and cultural aspects of life. Skin lightening compounds, such as hydroquinone and topical corticosteroids, are often used to treat hyperpigmentation disorders, such as melasma, or lighten skin for cosmetic purposes. ⋯ Regulatory agencies have also recognized the adverse effects of skin lighteners and many countries around the world now forbid the production and sale of these compounds, although this prohibition has not significantly curtailed distribution. Dermatologists and users of cosmetic products should be aware of the various components in bleaching compounds, their potential adverse effects, and alternative options for skin lightening.

Virtual preoperative assessment in surgical patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Preoperative assessment is a standard evaluation, traditionally done in-person in a preanesthesia clinic, for patients who will be undergoing a procedure involving anesthesia. Given the increased adoption of virtual care during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to review the effectiveness of virtual preoperative assessment for the evaluation of surgical patients. ⋯ This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrates the utility of virtual care for preoperative assessment of surgical patients. Virtual preanesthesia evaluation had similar surgery cancellation rates, high patient satisfaction, and reduced costs compared to in-person evaluation.

A study was conducted to evaluate mobile roadside speedometers as a means of controlling urban traffic speeds under varied schedules of deployment and speed limit law enforcement. Speeds of cars passing the roadside speedometer were measured using nondetectable radar. ⋯ However, the effect of the speedometer was limited to the times when it was actually deployed. Associated police enforcement is a key factor, as the effect of the speedometer decayed over time but could be long lasting with a minimal amount of enforcement activity in the area of the speedometer.

In this article, the authors further develop the theory of leader humility by exploring the affective impact, a vital boundary condition, and the antecedents of leader humility. Specifically, they (a) theorize how leader humility can enhance followers' performance by increasing their relational energy and decreasing their emotional exhaustion, (b) test perceived leader power in the organization as an important boundary condition of leader humility effectiveness, and (c) establish leader's incremental theory of the self (i.e., growth mindset) and relational identity as important enablers of leader humility. ⋯ Study 2-a multiphase field study surveying 201 leader-follower dyads embedded in 85 teams-not only replicates the results found in Study 1 with more objective, multirater employee performance, but more importantly, establishes leader incremental theory of the self (or growth mindset; Dweck, 2010) and relational identity as important antecedents of leader humility. The authors discuss theoretical and practical implications and recommend directions for future research. (PsycINFO Database Record

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialCoeliac plexus block versus pancreaticogastrostomy for pain in chronic pancreatitis. A controlled randomized trial.
Seventeen patients with chronic pancreatitis and dilated pancreatic ducts were randomly allocated to coeliac plexus block or pancreaticogastrostomy. The number of patients with pain relief after coeliac plexus block and pancreaticogastrostomy did not differ at discharge. ⋯ Operation decreased pancreatic tissue pressure significantly. This pressure decrease is believed to explain pain relief.
