Association of postoperative complications with persistent post-surgical pain: a multicentre prospective cohort study.
Persistent post-surgical pain is an important and under-recognised problem that is difficult to treat. Postoperative complications have been identified as possible risk factors for persistent post-surgical pain. We conducted a secondary analysis of the Measurement of Exercise Tolerance before Surgery (METS) cohort study to characterise the association of major postoperative complications with post-surgical pain at 30 days and 1 yr after major surgery. ⋯ Patients who developed major complications were more likely to report pain at 30 days and possibly 1 yr after surgery. Research is necessary to validate these findings and delineate underlying mechanisms.

Helicopter Emergency Medical Services in Trauma Does Not Influence Mortality in South Africa.
Sub-Saharan Africa carries a large trauma burden. Helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) have been suggested to reduce prehospital time and mortality. It is not clear whether HEMS infers a mortality benefit over ground transport in South Africa. This study aimed to determine whether HEMS improved 30-day mortality over ground emergency medical services (GEMS). ⋯ In a matched cohort of major trauma patients, HEMS does not seem to improve mortality over GEMS. These results might reflect the South African HEMS dispatch model.

Awareness of interventional radiology among patients referred to the interventional radiology department: a survey of patients in a large Canadian community hospital.
To quantify the level of knowledge about interventional radiology (IR) among patients referred for an IR procedure and to develop recommendations on how to increase public awareness of IR. ⋯ These data quantify and strongly support the views that (1) even among patients specifically referred to IR for a procedure, the majority of people are unaware of what the field is or may offer; and (2) most patients were satisfied with their IR experience. Six results-based recommendations are made to increase public awareness about IR.

Preoperative patient education for open-heart patients: a source of anxiety?
The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of preoperative patient education on anxiety and recovery of the Lebanese patients undergoing open-heart surgery. ⋯ The results suggest that patient education should not be initiated before assessing the patient's cultural and social background.

In the setting of mass casualty incidents (MCIs), hospitals need to divert from normal routine to delivering the best possible care to the largest number of victims. This should be accomplished by activating an established hospital disaster management plan (DMP) known to all staff through prior training drills. Over the recent decades, imaging has increasingly been used to evaluate critically ill patients. ⋯ After-action reviews including performance evaluation and debriefing on issues are invaluable following simulation drills and DMP activation, in order to improve subsequent preparedness. Historically, most hospital DMPs have not adequately included radiology department operations, and they have not or to a little extent been integrated in the DMP activation simulation. This article aims to increase awareness of the need for radiology department engagement in order to increase radiology department preparedness for DMP activation after a MCI occurs.
