Multicenter Study Meta AnalysisA genome-wide association study on African-ancestry populations for asthma.
Asthma is a complex disease characterized by striking ethnic disparities not explained entirely by environmental, social, cultural, or economic factors. Of the limited genetic studies performed on populations of African descent, notable differences in susceptibility allele frequencies have been observed. ⋯ This study illustrates the complexity of identifying true associations for a complex and heterogeneous disease, such as asthma, in admixed populations, especially populations of African descent.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyOmalizumab for the treatment of exacerbations in children with inadequately controlled allergic (IgE-mediated) asthma.
Many children with asthma continue to experience symptoms despite available therapies. ⋯ Add-on omalizumab is effective and well tolerated as maintenance therapy in children (6 to <12 years) with moderate-to-severe persistent allergic (IgE-mediated) asthma whose symptoms are inadequately controlled despite medium to high doses of ICSs.

Multicenter StudyPredictors of severe systemic anaphylactic reactions in patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy: importance of baseline serum tryptase-a study of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology Interest Group on Insect Venom Hypersensitivity.
Severe anaphylaxis to honeybee or vespid stings is associated with a variety of risk factors, which are poorly defined. ⋯ In patients with honeybee or vespid venom allergy, baseline serum tryptase concentrations are associated with the risk for severe anaphylactic reactions. Preventive measures should include substitution of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEfficacy of human C1 esterase inhibitor concentrate compared with placebo in acute hereditary angioedema attacks.
Hereditary angioedema caused by C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency is a rare disorder. ⋯ C1 esterase inhibitor concentrate given intravenously at a dose of 20 U/kg is an effective and safe treatment for acute abdominal and facial attacks in patients with hereditary angioedema, with a rapid onset of relief.

Multicenter StudyPhenotype of atopic dermatitis subjects with a history of eczema herpeticum.
A subset of subjects with atopic dermatitis (AD) are susceptible to serious infections with herpes simplex virus, called eczema herpeticum, or vaccina virus, called eczema vaccinatum. ⋯ Subjects with AD in whom eczema herpeticum develops have more severe T(H)2-polarized disease with greater allergen sensitization and more commonly have a history of food allergy, asthma, or both. They are also much more likely to experience cutaneous infections with S. aureus or molluscum contagiosum.
