Urinary liver-type fatty acid-binding protein level as a predictive biomarker of contrast-induced acute kidney injury.
Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a well-known complication of contrast medium exposure in patients with chronic kidney disease. However, there are no biological markers to accurately predict the onset of CI-AKI. Liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP), an intracellular carrier protein for free fatty acids, is markedly upregulated and abundantly expressed in the proximal tubules after renal ischaemia. We prospectively investigated whether urinary L-FABP is a suitable marker for the prediction of CI-AKI. ⋯ Urinary L-FABP level is useful for predicting the onset of CI-AKI before contrast medium exposure.

An integrative view on the carotid artery alterations in metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multiple risk factor paradigm widely considered in risk management. We aimed to investigate carotid artery alterations in MetS and the underlying risk factors. ⋯ Carotid alterations consequent upon MetS ultimately developed subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis, the underlying risk factors for which were abdominal obesity, hypertension, ageing and low level of HDL-C.

Validity of HMGB1 measurement in epithelial lining fluid in patients with COPD.
It has been known that high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory disorders in the lung. We attempted to determine the validity of measurement of HMGB1 levels in epithelial lining fluid (ELF) from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ HMGB1 levels in peripheral airways were elevated in smokers without COPD, as compared with non-smokers, and those levels were further augmented in COPD patients. Those levels were associated with the severity of COPD. Therefore, HMGB1 in peripheral airways may be a potentially interesting target for new pharmacological treatments in COPD patients.

Six-year prognosis of diabetic patients with coronary artery disease.
Diabetes is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. The aim of our study was to determine the prognostic factors for mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and coronary artery disease (CAD) who underwent coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention. ⋯ Our study shows a relatively good prognosis of patients with T2DM. Comorbidities, namely HF and renal impairment, are main determinants of survival.

Homogenous phenomenon of graft liver CYP2C19 genotypes after living donor liver transplantation.
The donor liver grafts with different allelic patterns do not affect CYP2C19 genotypes in the peripheral blood of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) recipients. ⋯ Homogenous phenomenon of sequence changes in graft liver CYP2C19 from the different genotypes between the donors and the recipients may play a role in graft stability by causing decreased HomEM and increased PM after LDLT.
