Prospective observational study of 2 wearable strain sensors for measuring the respiratory rate.
The respiratory rate is an important factor for assessing patient status and detecting changes in the severity of illness. Real-time determination of the respiratory rate will enable early responses to changes in the patient condition. Several methods of wearable devices have enabled remote respiratory rate monitoring. ⋯ The sensors detected the largest amplitudes at the epigastrium and umbilicus compared to other sites of measurement for the sitting and supine positions, respectively. At rest, the respiratory rate of the sensors had an error of 0.06 to 2.39 breaths/minute, whereas after exercise, an error of 1.57 to 3.72 breaths/minute was observed compared to the spirometer. The sensors were able to detect the respiratory rate of healthy volunteers in the sitting and supine positions, but there was a need for improvement in detection after exercise.

Evaluation of neck ultrasound measurements as a difficult airway predictor: A prospective observational study.
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cervical measurements and difficult airways using ultrasonographic measurements. American Society of Anesthesiologists grade I to III, male or female, 120 adult patients, undergoing elective surgery were enrolled in the study. The study involved measuring the distance of the trachea, cricoid cartilage, thyroid cartilage, vocal cord anterior commissure, and hyoid bone to the skin using a 10 to 13 MHz linear ultrasound probe in the transverse plane. ⋯ Additionally, other factors such as hyoid bone to skin distance, thyroid cartilage to skin distance, thyrohyoid membrane to skin distance, and vocal cord anterior commissure-skin distance were also identified as predictors for a difficult airway. The increase in the distance of the epiglottis midline, vocal cord anterior commissure, hyoid bone, thyrohyoid membrane, and thyroid cartilage to the skin at the level of the isthmus measured by ultrasonography is predictive of difficult airways. Based on our study outcomes, we assert that ultrasonographic evaluation can be used in the prediction of difficult airways.

This prospective controlled study investigates the effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on female sexual function, comparing recovered COVID-19-positive women with those uninfected by the virus. It aims to elucidate the broader impacts on sexual health and psychological well-being. This prospective controlled study included nonpregnant women of reproductive age and their partners, divided into COVID-19- positive (recovered) and negative groups. ⋯ The analysis of partners' sexual function highlighted minimal indirect impacts of the pandemic on intimate relationships. Despite the extensive global health implications, this study demonstrates resilience in female sexual function and psychological health among those affected by the virus. These findings emphasize the need for ongoing research and targeted interventions to support individuals navigate the pandemic-evolving challenges, highlighting resilience and adaptability as key factors in maintaining well-being.

Circulating/cerebrospinal T lymphocytes as indicators of clinical prognosis in intracerebral hemorrhage: A prospective study.
Secondary injury of cerebral hemorrhage is induced by systemic inflammatory cascades, which are related to perihematomal brain edema, cellular apoptosis, and the disruption of the blood-brain barrier. This study was to specifically elaborate the relationship of circulating/cerebrospinal T lymphocytes and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score at 6 months after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The enrolled patients were divided into 2 groups based on GCS score: the favorable prognosis group (GCS > 12) and unfavorable prognosis group (GCS ≤ 12). ⋯ In cerebrospinal fluid, there was a close correlation between the GCS scores and CD3+CD4+ percentage, CD4+/CD8+ ratio, CD3+ and CD3+CD4+ T lymphocyte counts. The area under the curve of CD4+/CD8+ T lymphocyte ratio was the largest among them (P = .000 and area under the curve = 0.917), with a significantly high specificity and sensitivity (0.917 and 1.000). Based on cerebrospinal fluid samples, the CD4+/CD8+ T lymphocyte ratio on Day 1 after ICH may be a more significant indicator to predict the short-term prognosis at 6 months after ICH.

Laboratory data and broncho-alveolar lavage on Covid-19 patients with no intensive care unit admission: Correlation with chest CT features and clinical outcomes.
Broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) is indicated in cases of uncertain diagnosis but high suspicion of Sars-Cov-2 infection allowing to collect material for microbiological culture to define the presence of coinfection or super-infection. This prospective study investigated the correlation between chest computed tomography (CT) findings, Covid-19 Reporting and Data System score, and clinical outcomes in Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) patients who underwent BAL with the aim of predicting outcomes such as lung coinfection, respiratory failure, and hospitalization length based on chest CT abnormalities. Study population included 34 patients (range 38-90 years old; 20 males, 14 females) with a positive nucleic acid amplification test for Covid-19 infection, suitable BAL examination, and good quality chest CT scan in the absence of lung cancer history. ⋯ Severe lung injury (PaO2/FiO2 ratio of 100-200) was associated with substantial involvement of right middle, right upper, and left lower lobes. No significant correlation was found between chest CT findings and inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein, procalcitonin) or hospitalization length of stay. Specific chest CT patterns, especially in right middle lobe, could serve as indicators for the presence of co-infections and disease severity in noncritically ill Covid-19 patients, aiding clinicians in timely interventions and personalized treatment strategies.
