Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEffectiveness of hemostatic gelatin sponge as a packing material after septoplasty: A prospective, randomized, multicenter study.
Although hemostatic gelatin sponge is a gelatin-based packing material with a powerful hemostatic effect, there were no studies in regard to its efficacy for packing material after septoplasty. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of hemostatic gelatin sponge nasal packing on patient's subjective symptoms, hemostasis, and wound healing following septoplasty. ⋯ The use of hemostatic gelatin sponge after septoplasty results in significantly less discomfort and greater patient satisfaction with no adverse reactions when compared with polyvinyl acetate packing. Therefore, hemostatic gelatin sponge may be a useful packing material after septoplasty.

Randomized Controlled TrialRandomized trial of standard pain control with or without gabapentin for pain related to radiation-induced mucositis in head and neck cancer.
Radiation-induced mucositis (RIM) in chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for head and neck cancer (HNC) causes severe pain and worsens CRT compliance, QOL and outcome. Following retrospective reports, we conducted a randomized trial of the safety and efficacy of gabapentin for RIM-associated pain during CRT. ⋯ This pilot study is the first prospective randomized trial of gabapentin for RIM-related pain. Gabapentin had no apparent beneficial effect. Further research into agents for RIM-related pain is warranted.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffects of nebulized amphotericin B and budesonide inhalation for chronic cough-related laryngeal sensations.
To compare the acute effects of single nebulized amphotericin B and budesonide in treating cough-related laryngeal sensations in chronic cough patients, a randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial was performed between two groups with positive and negative results of basidiomycetous (BM) fungi in their sputum culture. ⋯ The results of this study suggested that appropriate use of single inhalation of budesonide or amphotericin B, which would be selected based on the results of sputum culture, may lead to suppression of cough-related laryngeal sensations, such as SIT or SMIT.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of postural restriction after modified Epley maneuver on recurrence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
In the present study, we calculated the success rate of the modified Epley maneuver and determined the effectiveness of post-maneuver positional restriction in terms of the prevention of early and late recurrence. ⋯ Postural restriction after a canalith repositioning procedure does not improve procedural success or decrease early and late recurrence rates. However, the number of patients was too small to detect a difference between both treatment groups.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyUsefulness of nasal packing with silver-containing carboxy methylated cellulose in endonasal sinus surgery.
Silver-containing carboxymethylcellulose fiber dressing (Aquacel®-Ag) has been used to treat burns and ulcers with a large amount of exudate. The aim of this investigation was to confirm whether Aquacel®-Ag has beneficial effects when it is used as nasal packing. ⋯ The results indicate that Aquacel®-Ag might contribute to hemostasis, wound healing, and patient comfort after endonasal surgery, similar to Beschitin-F®. Additionally, it may have advantages concerning the prevention of postoperative infection.
